Well this is our last destination and today is the last day of our 3 month tour of India. Calcutta had surprised us both, we we're not expecting much from the city but have been surprised by the London style streets, pavements and buildings and by the amount of things to see and do.
This city is rather busy but has been very easy to move around in, tasks that we have had to do here would have taken days in other cities, but here we have been able to accomplish loads.
As with other cities there is a lot of poverty and the city is full of contrasts, the divide between the rich and poor is very wide and very apparent. Our hotel room here has to rank up there with the worst, but the area we are staying in seems to be pretty crammed with travelers so we would have probably found it hard to find somewhere else. However the shower has been great so we both feel nice and clean.
Traffic here is a problem, the taxi ride that we are about to depart on to the airport will take up to 2 hours to cover the 20km distance. Also the drivers here are pretty scary; they don't really stop for pedestrians just kind of swerve towards them in an aggressive manner. I'm learning a lot about alternative driving techniques that I might experiment with upon returning to the UK.
Food here has been some of the best we have had since our stay in India and during our "best/ Worst" listing sessions the other night the restaurant "B-B-Q" came out on top. Full results will be published in due course.
Flight in 7 hours so must dash, next stop Singapore!!
