Today, Shirley has a new area of Barcelona picked out to explore ,which is the Jewish quarter. In Catalan the Jewish quarter goes by the name of El Call meaning narrow passage for the tight lanes where Medieval Jews use to live. The walk will take us around two hours . We will start at the southeast corner of the Placa de Cata-Lunya, from here we will explore the church of Santa Anna which was built in the 12 centry,it was part of a convent and still has its marker cross standing outside. Next is the ELS quarter Gats,it's famous for being the circa 1900 bohemian-artist hangout where Picasso nursed drinks with friends and had his first one man art show. We found this old fountain which dates back to the 1700s. We then move on to the Placa Nova, here we find Two bold Roman towers, these once Guarded the entrance gate of an ancient Roman city. While in this square we find a Picasso drawing carved out in a concrete slab ,child like in appearance, but captures typical Catalan activities. In this square stands the enormous and beautiful Barcelona Cathedral which has been Barcelona's holiest spot for 2000 years. We wonder along and we come across the monument to the Martyrs of independence, erected to the five patriots including row priests who were garrotted for resisting Napoleons' occupation of Spain.
There was so much more to tell, that it would be to much for the blog .
moving to Florence tomorrow so see you all there.
