Thurs. April 17th cruise on the Ord RiverI started to write a technical description of the Ord River, Lake Kununurra and Lake Argyle but got really mixed u so let's just say it is a massive scheme which was intended to make the Kimberley's the fruit bowl of Australia. It makes you weep when you are from Brisbane and see the massive amount of water here and you are told they only use 10% of it but we didn't come here for a history lesson we came to marvel at the beauty of the place. It is stunning and the very fast boat ride over 55ks was exhilarating. We saw the freshwater crocs but unfortunately I didn't get any video of them because they quickly slide under the water once they realise they have been spotted maybe the bigger saltwater crocs further north will be bolder.Early to bed tonight to be awake for our 5.30am flight tomorrow.Friday the Bungle BunglesRise at 5am and in the air by 6am was it worth it? Yes even though now at 6.30pm we feel like and look 90 year olds.We could have flown at 9am, 12 noon or 3pm but chose the early start because the turbulence is worse later in the day.The Bungles were only really discovered in the 1980s before then the Aborigines, a few pastoralists and a few helicopter pilots knew about them and then in 1983 a T.V. crew came to film a documentary about cattle in the Kimberley's and a helicopter pilot told them about these strange rock formations so having some time to spare they persuaded him to take them there. When they got back to the studios the bosses were much more interested in the rocks than the cattle and screened the programme which informed the world about the Bungles. It is now a world heritage site.Even after 3 yrs here and quite a bit of travelling we still get taken by surprise by the size of the country and the remoteness of so many places.Today it took us ¾ hr to fly to the Bungles from the nearest point of civilisation and 20 minutes to fly round them.We flew over Lake Argyle which gave us a much better perspective of its size than the boat trip did.We also flew over the Argyle Diamond Mine which has the biggest diamond reserves in the world. They have an airport runway which can take the big jets and they reckon there will be about 200 millions worth of diamonds under it. A new runway would cost 50 million so if needed they would just build another runway. What about the Bungles?Sorry too hard for a poor hack like me to describe. We haven't viewed the photos or video yet but hope they can do the area some kind of justice. We could have taken a flight which included a walk in one of the gorges which would have been awesome but I have to admit defeat on walking. Is it worth the cost? definitely but we both agree a 2hr flight is enough in a small plane.Tomorrow we leave Western Australia for the Northern Territory which will include Darwin and Kakadu but 1st stop Katherine with its gorge and hot springs which I am really looking forward to.We are hoping to get on a caravan site which has a gate which goes through to the hot springs. It might even be worth getting up early for as it is a 500k drive and will be dark by about 5 o clock so we shall have to get a move on if we want our first hot dip tomorrow.
