Monday Port HedlandDidn't get to do the mine trip at Tom Price and now we are in Port Hedland another town expanded in the 60s this time to act as a port for the iron ore mines. We are hoping to do a tour on Weds to see the long, long trains which bring the ore from the mines and how it is loaded on the ships. If we don't get to do the tour there are viewpoints where you can get a good view of these things probably this is where the tour will take us.The van park we are on are also famous for being one of the best places to see the Stairway to the Moon. When there is a full moon at this time of the year the moon reflects onto the big puddles on the beach and it looks like a stairway to the moon.Last night was a full moon so we thought we are here at the right time but no we are told we have missed it but if we get up at sunrise i.e. just before 6am we should see the Stairway to the Sun sounds like a tourist board con but we shall set the alarm and give it a try.Temp this afternoon on the way here 42 degrees.A very hot Tuesday in Port HedlandWe made it!At 5.55pm down on the beach cameras ready. We took lots of photos and video and thought well with a bit of imagination it could look like a staircase but at about 6.10 the sun started to rise and we could see what they meant it does definitely look like a staircase but once the sun lifts clear of the sea the illusion is lost.It is a sight worth seeing. The one to the moon is reckoned to be more spectacular but we seem to be in the right place at the wrong time.We thought we might see it in Broome but we would have to stay in Broome about 10 days which would be too long for us.We have found it helpful to go to the visitor centres when we arrive in a place and the one here was very helpful.Following their advice we saw the salt lakes. The big ships coming in and out and a special treat, turtles. At high tide they came quite close to the shore but it is difficult to say how big they are because they only stay on the surface for a few seconds when they come up to breathe. The tour tomorrow is on so we shall be up early again to pack up and move the van down to the town before 9.15 then it is on to Broome taking 2 days because it is over 600ks.
