We arrived at Danang airport just after lunch on Wednesday and were collected by car for the drive along the Danang Beach area to our resort, Vinh Hung Riverside Resort in Hoi An. As the name suggests, we are right on the river and just a five minute walk over a bridge to the ancient town. There are many restaurants along the streets and on either side of the bridge connecting the spur of land we are on to the main township. After check-in we went to the pool outside our building only to find that the water is quite hot, probably because of the long stretch of hot weather that Vietnam has been having. Our hotel has what they call a country market each evening where there are a number of stalls cooking food for you to sample for free. Needless to say, we got into this!
We walked into the old town on dusk and got our bearings with the various streets. As we walked along one of the main streets I saw a lane with red lanterns hanging across it. When we ventured down there we discovered a place we had eaten at six years ago. It is called Bale Well and has no menus but brings food to your table, like a set menu. We had rice paper which the lady showed us how to load with greens, pickled vegetables, a spring roll and a satay before rolling and dipping in a satay sauce. As we worked our way through these she brought out egg pancakes which we also put in rice paper along with greens and rolled up. You could eat as much as you like and they just keep bringing it. I didn't do it justice after our country market but Peter did his best! We sauntered back to our hotel after stocking up on water, diet coke and beer.
This morning we wandered into town again and looked at various travel booking offices with a view to booking a tour to Hue and possibly a fishing tour. We got lots of information to digest for later. Once back at the hotel it was time to go to the pool again and relax. 3 nights here might not be enough, it's nice to be going at a slower pace than we have for the last week. Tonight we plan to go into town to a restaurant called Morning Glory that everyone raves about.
