Jen's Travel Diary
Hey,
So we have made it to Kanchanaburi. After a 2h30mins minibus ride through to the east of Thailand we have reached the tranquil area of Kanchanaburi.
It is the area most famous for the Bridge of the River Kwai. Which is stunning by the way!!
The first night that we arrived we went to the Tiger Temple, which to me seemed slightly cruel, it was down in a quarry and run by monks, and the tigers seemed quite lethargic. But Annie enjoyed stroking the tigers at close quarters - I just took photos!
We have been staying at the Jolly Frog backpackers hostel, which has amazing views over the river and is also very cheap!!
Today we went to the River Kwai Bridge. The Bridge itself is not that amazing, just a reconstruced steel structure, but the views that you can see are, well, stunning! We ate at one of the floating restaurants along the river - it was really nice - if a little more expensive.
We also rented a boat to go downriver to the Caves at Thoa Poo, they were a bit narrow and scarey - and have a huge Buddha sitting in them! We had to cross Death Railway to get to them - not the safest of bridges I have to say! You can see why a lot of POW's lost their life building it!
We are off for some beers now down the main street in Kanchanaburi, but tomorrow we are heading off, via Bangkok train station, to Chang Mai in the north of the country.
