Jen's Travel Diary
We arrived in Singapore on Friday afternoon. The journey took 6h from 'Tioman' but it was fine.
We have met up with Steve and Sandra Baker, who have offered us a place to stay and have also been so kind as to show us round the city. They have been really good to us.
Last night they took us out to dinner at one of the local restaurants, which was really nice. It had lots of stalls and you just ordered lots of dishes from each.
Today (Saturday) we took the car and have been on a sightseeing tour of the city. It is dominated by skyscrapers and is extremely clean and orderly. We took the coast road (it is all man made as the land is reclaimed) towards the 'Colonial District' near the Singapore River. A traditional "Bumboat" was travelling down the river as we stood at Cavenagh Bridge. From the bridge we could see "Boat Quay" (old ship warehouses which have now been made into posh bars and restaurants), the "Asian Civilization Museum" and the Esplanade. We then drove past "Parliament House", "Padang cricket ground", the Supreme court, "Raffles Hotel" (very posh). We then went to "Little India" for lunch - we ate curry off of a banana leaf! After that we went through the "Arab Quarter" towards the botanic gardens and monkey park. In the afternoon Annie and I went shopping on "Orchard Road" (a massive shopping street, with malls). It is a little cheaper here, but not so much so! Tonight we are going to the huge multi-plex cinema to see "Sideways".
Today (Sunday) we set off towards "Chinatown". We visited the "Jamae Chulia Mosque" which was a nice green colour. We then went to the olive and clove garden which was set back from the road. "Thian Hock Keng Temple" was a georgeous suprise to find town one of the side roads, it was so ornate and colourful. We then walked "Telok Ayer" Street which is where all the old style Chinese houses are situated - they have been nicely renovated. We ate lunch at "Far East Square" which was one of the redeveloped areas of Chinatown- we found toasted sarnies. In the afternoon we went to "Fort Canning Park", it had great views over the city and we had a lovely walk round the fort. Afterwards we ended up at "Clarke Quay" and just wandered looking at the prices (it is a very posh area). We then took the #16 bus back to the "Mandarin Gardens". Tonight we are going out for a meal in a Thai/Chinese restaurant.
Tomorrow we leave Singapore to fly to Bali.
