Jen's Travel Diary
Well this is our last day in Bangkok before we move on to Kanchanaburi.
To get around the city we have been using Tuk-Tuks, the resonably priced nippy motorbikes with carriges. If you barter with them you can usually can get a journey for 10-30 baht. Although the downside is that you are more then likely going to end up at a shop (tailors/jewellery/silk) as the Tuk-Tuk drivers are on comission. If you stay in the shops for 10mins they get a petrol voucher. This has led to us trying on many silk dressing gowns and pyjamas, necklaces and rings. Very amusing all round!!
We went to the Chatuchak Weekend market on Sunday, it was very hot and busy but had many bargins to be found. Annie brought a purse, belt and some earrings and I brought some hair clips and lots of water!!
For two nights we satyed in the Suk11 hostel, which was cheap but with very comfy dorms and provided breakfast free! The only disadvantage was along the street a great number of men were picking up Thai women for the night, we spent a very amusing evening in a pub with all of these "couples".
We have been busy doing lots of sightseeing, with many Buddhas and Temples seen.
On Monday we went on a Tuk-Tuk tour around the north on Banglamphu, Bangkok. We visited the Golden Mount, which after walking up 400 steps we had superb views over the whole of the area. To one side were the richly decorated temples and on the other were the shanty towns by the murky river. We then went on to see the Standing Buddha which was quite big!! After that we visited the Wat Benchamabophit Marble Temple, which was very ornate and had a mixture of thai and European influences.
Today we visited Wat Phra Kaeo and the Grand Palace, and it was very, very spacious! We saw the shrine to the Emerald Buddha, where lots of people we kneeling and praying. To enter this site we had to change into appropriate garments, because you have to cover your legs, ankles and shoulders - Annie was looking stunning in her ensomble!! Also at the palace we were interviewed and photographed by interested students from one of the local Universities - it was very funny!
We also saw Wat Po, the reclining Buddha - who was reclining for a long distance - it was made from nearly pure gold and mother-of-pearl!
Finally we took a longtail boat across the Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun-the temple of the dawn. This tower was built of shiny stone and included broken bits of porcelain, shaped as flowers. The different levels were supported by mythical figures.
We have stayed the last couple of nights in Lek guesthouse, which is very basic - toilet showers+to flush the toilet you have to get bowls of water! But the women running it are nice. it is situated along Kuao San road, which is very busy at night and the main backpacker destination.
Well that is all from Bangkok, it is a very busy city with many Tuk-Tuks, Temples and Buddhas but has been a great experience - just bartering with Tuk-Tuk drivers for a ride will stay with me!
