Jen's Travel Diary
We arrived from Melbourne at 6.30 this morning after 12h on the nightbus. The journey was ok, the coach was a double-decker with TV and a toilet! We then took a taxi to Anne-Marie's relatives Jane and John's house in Greenwich, for which we had to go over the "Sydney Harbour Bridge"! They have a lovely house which is 2 minutes walk from the ferry port that takes you into the city. In the afternoon we met up with Dave (Anne-Marie's uni friend) and had a wander around the city, just to get our bearings. We walked beside the water right near the "Sydney Harbour Bridge" and the "Sydney Opeara House". We then caught the ferry back to Greenwich where Jane had prepared roast dinner - our first in 2 months.
We have spent the last few days trying to bed ourseleves into the city, and find a job. The weather has not been all that good so sightseeing is out!
To get to Sydney city centre we have to take the ferry from 'Greenwich' to 'Circular Quay'. It is only a 15 minute ferry ride away which is really handy. It is really surreal as you go under "The Bridge" and past "The Opera House" everyday - almost like a dream! At 'Circular Quay' all other forms of transport are available, they have the most strange monorail - there are two levels of carriages like a double decker bus! The city is not to bad to navigate around as it is all in a grid system, where ever you go it is very hard to get lost! The main street we use is 'George Street', it has lots of main shops and the supermarket (Coles - like an old fahioned English shop); also a lot of the cheaper bars.
On Monday we went to 'Bondi' and did a little bit of shopping and then met up with Dave to go to "Bondi Beach". The beach is a georgeous strip of white sand and the surf is quite strong. We did not see to many beautiful people on the beach though as it was a little windy and overcast. In the evening we met up with Dave's friends to have a few games of pool.
On Tuesday we met Anne-Marie's sister Charlotte in Sydney city centre and went for lunch, after a hard morning trying to find a job (no success). In the evening we went out on our first big night in Sydney. Charlotte took us to a few of the main bars ("Star Bar" and "Hotel Pavillion") and then onto "Scruffy Murphys" for a dance where a live band played lots of alternative tunes - it was really fun!! Mind you...drinks are expensive and all the cocktails are really different to the ones in the Uk! We got home at 3am - it was a random but top night!!
On Thursday we went sightseeing in Sydney. We went to "Paddys Market", which sells all sorts of things from clothes to food to odd bits and bobs. Annie decided that trying on a wig would be the best thing so after much consideration she ended up looking like Cher! We then went down towards the Harbour to the "Chinese Garden", we could not afford to enter but from the outside you could see in and it looked beautiful!! Next we passed the "Sydney Entertainment Centre" (massive gig that evening) to get to "Cockle Bay Wharf" and "Darling Harbour". It was really nice down there, it is a cosmopolitan area with very expensive bars, work offices and entertainment centres. The sun came out which made it really pretty, all the flowers and the expensive boats looked amazing. Then we walked past the "Sydney Tower", it has a great view over Sydney but at 10 quid entry it was a little steep - we are going to the Bridge in a few days and the view from there is supposed to be spectacular. We ended the day in the "Royal Botanic Gardens", which had great views over the water and the "Opera House", very relaxing. In the evening we went out to some of the bars around North Sydney. We started at "Hotel Metropolis", a student bar, and then moved onto "2060", a very posh and expensive place where we met some of Charlotte's friends (Jarod, Marty and John) who decided to buy us drinks! After that we went to "Bar Central", which was really nice - a good wind down the evening bar. We then all stayed at Charlotte's friend Jarods house as it was nearby!
On Friday we had a late lunch and headed into Sydney city centre to go to the cinema to see "Be Cool", it was a strange film but really funny!!
On Saturday we headed out early to go to "The Sydney Royal Easter Show". It was held at the Sydney Olympic Park, that place is amazing it was where the Olympics were held and was so big. It is a self contained complex, with food areas and so many stadia. We saw lots of Showjumping in the Main Arena, it was really good to watch and Annie and Charlotte told me about all the horses and what was going on! We then went into another tent only to find an "X-Factor" stage, lots of hopefuls were singing there heart out in front of us - some were so bad we could not help laughing! We then went back to the Main Arena to watch the Horse Scullys - it is where two horses pull a carriage around the Arena, but they are racing around the course against another team. It was mad, especially when it was the little Shetland horse teams, but was fun! The final event that we saw was an International Polo match between NZ and Aus, it was close but NZ were up 9-8 when we left. I have never seen polo before but it was really interesting to watch the skill of the riders and the flat out speed of the horses. After the Show we went out in the evening to "Darling Harbour" to "Cargo Club" until 4am, the music was really good as they mixed dance music with a live saxophone player.
On Sunday we spent a day sunbathing, its the first hot day that we have had! We then went out to "Kings Cross" to check out the bars and clubs. Being a main backpacker area we though it would be the ideal place to go on a Sunday but it was discovered that you have to be rich to go out there on a Sunday as everywhere had an entry fee of 8-15 quid!!! So we decided to go to "Bourbon", a nice relaxing bar, and have a few drinks before heading home.
