Jen's Travel Diary
Week 3 in Sydney has begun. We are working 5 days this week so our days will be filled with sandwich making until 3pm!!
On Monday evening we headed out to 'George Street' to "Scubar" as it was the crab racing night again and we were determined to enter each and ever race! There was a table and in the centre were 18 crabs under a mixing bowl, when the race started the bowl was lifted and it was the first crab to walk off the table that won. There was an announcer and he picked an assistant out of the crowd for every race. The names of our crabs had to be original so up stepped "Spunky Funk" in the first race. He came near last, not really leaving the centre of the table. In the next race "Scabby" did not do much better!!! In the last race to increase the odds Annie and I managed to get a crab each, Mine was called "Spanky" and Annie's was called "Spunky Funk II". But before the last race began the announcer decided that Annie should be his assistant for the last race; her job entailed reading the names of the crabs, gyrating against a wall to music and starting the race by letting the crabs go!! It was hilarious!!! The race did not go all that well for Annie as her crab barely moved, my crab on the other hand came a close 5th!! During the crab racing we met a group of English guys (Sergio, Adam, Jamie, Fabrizzio), so spent the evening with them - betting on who's crab would win, dancing and drinking lots of cheap wine! Sergio's crab won the last race and he won a free skydive in Sydney and a free Scubar cap!! By the time that we looked at our watches again it was just gone 3am, it was a really good night and I think that we will be at the crab racing again before we leave!!
On Thurday we decided to have a light night out so we went to North Sydney to "2060" bar. We caught up with some people that we had met previously and also met a group of Australian guys, who we discovered later were 18/19 - oh well! We shot a few games of pool with them and had a few glasses of wine and had a really good evening. Got in nice and early (3am) so we would be effective sandwich makers!
Yay its the end of the working we week! On Friday night we decided to go out on 'George Street'. First off we headed to "Jacksons bar" for a nice relaxing glass of wine - it is primarily a sports bar but has nice comfortable seats. From there we went to "Pavillion Hotel" to play some pool, but the tables were all occupied, so we had to settle for a cocktail instead! They do special $5 cocktails at the weekend so we both tried the "Peach Passion" - it tasted like "Tutti Fruity" sweets, a bit sickly. After that we went to "The Three Wise Monkeys" bar and had a few glasses of wine and managed also to get a seat on one of the nice sofas upstairs. Then we headed onto the only place possible..."Scruffy Murphys"!! It was the live band night again, so we rocked out to anything from Green Day to Build me up Buttercup (also in a rock style!). Met some nice Australian guys who happily danced at the front with us all night. At the end of the evening the drummer from the band asked Anne-Marie to dance as he seemed to quite like her, but she was a bit busy looking for her gold belt that she had lost!!
Today (Saturday) we headed out to the 'Botanic Garden' near the Opera House to catch some rays, it was like 25C today. It was really busy, but what was really nice was that a couple had sectioned an area off and were having their wedding reception there. They had a live string band and the whole area looked really fancy! We headed out to 'Darling Harbour' this evening. We went to a new bar called "26" which was really nice and modern, it had great views over 'Darling Harbour' and did not have a cover charge to enter. Mind you they made up for it by charging $8 for a vodka and lime! We then wandered down to "Cargo" bar meeting up with Jason who we had met on the plane over from Singapore to Melbourne - it was very wierd to see him though(just bumping into people seems to happen quite often, what with all backpackers seeming to do the same route). Had a good evening chatting and dancing with Jason and his mates, we walked them home over the "Pymont Bridge" (a bridge that turns in half for very tall boats) as we had not been that way before and caught a taxi home.
On Sunday we went to 'Manly' beach nice and early as the day was predicted to be a scorcher - and it was!! Spent the day on the beach joined by Dave and Michelle, it was nice as there was a cool breeze. Mind you the Lifeguards were announcing warnings to all swimmers as "Bluebottles" (a form of jelyfish) were spotted near the beach and if you got caught by one then they would leave a nasty mark and you in pain for 30mins - at that we decided to stay on the beach!!
