Jen's Travel Diary
Well this is week 4 now in Sydney and we are starting our 2nd full week at work in the sandwich shop.
We decided to go out Monday night along 'George Street'. First off we headed to a new bar that we had not been to before which has been recommended by a number of people. "SideBar' is just off the corner of George Street near "Scubar". We decended the steps to the underground bar and we were really surprised it was very spacious and busy - mind you there is a backpackers hostel right next door! We both enjoyed our $10 cocktails in a jug - I had "Polish Princess (although I have no idea why it was called that as the cocktail was yellow in colour and had mandarin vodka in it). After that we tried unsuccessfully to get into "Scubar", so decided that the best thing was to head down to "Scruffy Murphys" - what a surprise!!! In all honesty it is the cheapest (free entry) bar/club that is around, has good live band music upstairs and a DJ downstairs and a large number of backpackers go there (Right i feel I have justified why we always end up there!!!). We met up with the same group of OZ men that we had seen the previous week. We all had a great time dancing and rocking away. I also met two older Danish men (Peter and Brian) who wanted me to become there female dance partner so I happily brought some youth to there dance moves! Annie managed to highjacked a young guys hat (he was celebrating his birthday) and dance around in it for 10 minutes before he stole it back! At the end of the night the drummer of the band tried to ask Annie out again but this time she was busy with Mark - one of the guys from the group of OZ men that we had been dancing with earlier (so the drummer stormed off!!!. Oh she does break hearts!!).
On Wednesday after work we decided that as it was such a good day we would go into town. I really wanted to walk over the 'Sydney Harbour Bridge' so this is what we did. The steps were near the entrance to "Milsons Point Station". We walked along the whole Bridge, it was really shakey what with all the cars buses and trains that use it. You can only walk along the 'Sydney Opera House' side of the Bridge as the other side is used by the trains. The structure is so unbelievebly strong - wrought iron metal. The view was spectacular though; you could see the 'Opera House', "The Rocks", "Circular Quay", the east of the city, and right out into the suburbs. At the centre of the Bridge you can climb up "Pylon lookout" and view the other north and west sides of the city, as well as looking in more detail at the 'Quay' and 'Opera House' - I also managed to see 'Pymont Bridge' at 'Darling Harbour'. We also saw some people doing the Bridge-Climb", those mad fools! It took us about 45mins in total to cross the bridge and it was time well spent!!!
On Thursday night we headed out to "Kings Cross". We first went to "World bar" which was quality. It had very cracking tunes (indie, hip-hop and funk) a retro style inside (the brown flower wallpaper, gold lights and big couches) and some very cool people! You could buy a teapot which contained your choice of cocktail - but at $15 each they were a bit expensive for us! We then moved onto the "Kings Cross Hotel" as it was Indie night. Oh I have missed the alternative music - from Bloc Party to The Kills to Kaiser Chiefs!! It was a really fun night; rocking out to the tunes, and shooting some pool - also was good to see the mad hairstyles again!
Its Friday, the end of the working week!!! Tom arrived from Melbourne today, the mad fool drove for three days straight convinced that he could stop off and surf on the way - but the surf has been flat the last week! We went out last night to 'George Street'. First we went into "Jacksons" bar - we managed to get one of the comfy booth-like seats. Tom decided to have a pint of beer, what actually came was more like a jug - but being a trooper he downed it anyways! Next we headed up to "Star Bar" but could not get in as there was a private party - "Superman" is being filmed in Sydney at the moment so we think it was a private party for the cast and crew. So after that we headed up to "The Three Wise Monkeys", for the first time we managed to get onto the 3rd floor where there was a live band playing (same old cover version stuff, but live all the same). There were a lot of Chinese people there, and one man in particular (we named "The Incredible Dancing Man") was really giving it some and rocking out to the tunes! We stayed in there till one and then went onto "Scruffys", where there was a U2 tribute act on upstairs and a hip-hop DJ spinning some tunes downstairs. Downstairs I got chatted up by Jake 'Sydney Warriers' rugby league player (me thinks he was a slight lier!) while Annie and Tom broke out the moves on the dancefloor, I eventually managed to get away from Jake and could not stop laughing for at least ten mins - do people really believe him?!! Anyways we had a really good night, got home nice and early (3.30am) as Tom needed a sleep due to his mad long drive!
On Saturday we set off at lunchtime to head for 'The Rocks'. First off we went for lunch down one of the cobbled backstreets. 'The Rocks' is a very historic area, with historically restored buildings, museums, galleries, cafes and old style pubs. We then went to the open-air market that they hold every weekend; it had lots of art and craft stalls, massage stalls, and food stalls - all very traditional. I got a really nice charcoal drawing of Sydney. We then just walked around the whole of the area, seeing all the old style houses and little shops down the sidestreets. After that we walked up to Obsevatory Hill to get a view over the city. On the way we passed like 8 weddings, nice place to have one though! We sat for a while on the Hill taking in the view and then headed into town for a bit where we saw the filming of Superman - no stars though! In the evening we headed into town to some bars that we had not been into before. "Establishment", a very smart and posh bar - also very trendy and "Privilage", a nice underground bar that had half-price cocktails! From there we went onto 'Darling Harbour' to '26' Bar and 'Cargo'. We had a good night, Annie met a man who worked for 'Universal Records' and at the end of the night he and his mate gave us all a life home in a Mercedes Benz!!!!
