Jen's Travel Diary
Well we are heading into our second week in Sydney. We have got the feel of the place a bit more, and now know our way round a little of the city. This week has been earmarked for jobhunting.
We had a lazy day Easter Monday keeping all our energy for the night ahead! We headed out first to "Jacksons" bar on 'George Street' quiet but a good place to start the evening. Next up was "Three Wise Monkeys" where we met a girl who can only be described as mad - and she owned a pair of silver flashing shoes! We then headed up to "Scubar" for the crab racing night, but due to the queue we missed it. It was a tiny little bar with a very small dancefloor, all of us ended up with drinks over us before we decided to leave. The last bar/club for the night was "Scruffy Murphys" - another live band played the usual hits (70s and 80s) but in an alternative way which was well good! We danced for about 4h so by the time that we got home we were knackered!!
Up early on Tuesday for a trip with Jane to the "Blue Mountains".We drove first to "Katoomba" one of the main towns in the area - it was old fashioned and kind of rundown but in a good way. From there we went to "Echo Point" where there were stunning views over the rugged mountain range. At "Echo Point" is the famous "Three Sisters" rock formation. It was a little chilly but the views we superb with the blue haze drifting over the mountain range. We then had lunch at 'Blackheath' on the otherside of the mountain range. On our way back we stopped at "Leura" and had tea and cake, it is a really old little town - quaint.
Spent Wednesday attempting to find a job in "Crows Nest" and then "St Leonards". We went into every possible restaurant and cafe handing in CV and chatting to the managers. And, it all paid off!!! We have jobs working 6h days in a sandwich bar called "Sierra" (making sandwiches, burgers, coffee, pasta and salads). The owners are really nice, and especially understanding over the short period of time we want to work. Spent the evening relaxing before our first day at work!
On Thursday we were up early for our first day at "Sierra". It was considered a training day (but we still got paid) where we learnt the sandwich making ropes - although its going to take a bit longer to learn the prices!! Left at 2pm after making nearly 30 sandwiches each!!! We went out on a huge night out in Sydney as it was Charlottes last night in OZ before she headed out to Thailand. We started off in 'North Sydney' in "The Greenwood", a really nice bar set in an old church - student area therefore cheap. Good news was that we managed to get our drinks in before happy hour ended at 10pm! From there we headed onto "The Loft" in 'Darling Harbour', now that is what i call a bar - it was superb!! It had big sofas, moody lighting, a view out onto the harbour (and boats) and cocktails prices to match. I had a "Banana and Fig Daqurai" which was delicious!! - but $14 (6 quid)!! We then moved onto "Hunters Bar", it was a slick looking underground bar with a small dancefloor and unfortunatly for us...wierd electo-funk music?! So all things considered we headed up 'George Street' to good old Scruffy Murphys - live band, cheap drinks and all the men that Charlotte (and Annie) needed!!
The second day at work went much better, have managed to learn some of the prices and make less mistakes when it comes to the art of sandwich making. We headed out on Friday night meeting up with our friends Louise and Gemma (who we met in Kuala Lumpar), as it was Louise's birthday. We went to "Cargo" in 'Darling Harbour' and moved onto 'Kings Cross', ending up in "The Empire Hotel" - a wierd kind of place but still we had a dance and a few drinks.
On Saturday we headed out of the city to 'Bondi Beach'. It was a really hot day so we did some sunbathing on the lovely long arch of white sand. We decided against swimming as there were so many surfers! We met up with Dave and some of his friends from the hostel (Welsh John and Simon). The area is quite expensive to eat at as there are lots of little cafes that over look the beach. We then all headed out in the evening to 'Kings Cross'. We went to a few bars before going to "Moulin Rouge". Its fair to say that 'Kings Cross' is quite a seedy cheap area. You pass a lot of X rated shops and frequently get invited to watch a "dancing show"! "Moulin Rouge" was really nice, it was an underground club decked out in red material and had waitresses in bodices. The music was quite funky, so we all had a dance and a fun evening.
On Sunday we took advantage of another very hot and sunny day and headed out to 'Manly Beach' on the ferry. It is a little less surf orientated, but still a largely tourist area. The beach, I think, is a lot nicer than the one at 'Bondi' as it had some shaded areas as well as the georgeous arch of white sand. it was really busy, but there were live music performers in the street, and a man making a very artistic sandcastle on the beach. It had a really nice atmosphere! Decided to have a quiet evening at home ready for our first working week.
