We arrived in Nelson in the early evening, but it was still warmer than we had experienced over the previous week, so we decided to make the most of it and do as much outside as possible.
On our first full day in the town, we did what came naturally and spent the morning wandering around the shops, and had a look in the visitors centre. Every town and city seems to have brand new information centres, and everything out here is so easily accessible, it kinda feels like cheating sometimes. In the afternoon, we took a walk up a hill just behind our hostel, as at the top of this hill is the geographical centre of New Zealand. The walk was only short and the views form the top were pretty cool, although we had no idea which way was north, east, south and west!?
The next day we had more walking around the town, but this time it was for the sights rather than the shops. The cathedral is a freaky looking building with huge steps leading up to the front of it, and the bell tower is see-through. There aren't really any windows as such, just big gaps in the brickwork that have been made to look like there should be glass in them only there isn't!! Gave us the creeps!!
Then it was just up the road to South Street, which is home to some of the oldest houses in the country. There was only a handful of buildings, all made of wood, but it was still a sharp contrast to the rest of the town.
That evening was spent in Shark Club, where they have free pool every day for a couple of hours, before it was back to the hostel to get ready for leaving the next day. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to get to Abel Tasman national park (probably due to our window shopping escapades!), but we are due to go to Nelson Lakes national park on the way to Westport with the Experience crew tomorrow.
