We left Queenstown on Sunday and headed to Dunedin, home to the scarfies (students) and the 'House Of Pain' rugby stadium. We arrived around 1:00pm and first stop was Baldwin Street, officially the steepest street in the world according to the Guinness book of records. There is a race held every year and people run from the bottom to the top and back again in around two minutes - needless to say, it took us a little while longer to get just to the top. Once we were all back down again it was off to Otago Peninsula to see yellow eyed penguins and seals.
We got driven around the area in these cool eight-wheeled buggy's and got to within a few inches of the fur seals. Although they breed naturally as they would anywhere else in the wild, they are in a protected conservation area and the people running the centre ensure that nobody moves to quickly or uses the flash on their cameras. This means that the seals see no danger in humans, and people can get really close to them. However, the yellow-eyed penguins were a lot harder to see, as they are one of the world's most endangered species and we had to view them from a fair distance.
Yesterday was spent wandering around the city and getting our bearings, before we embarked on a couple of tours today.
The first of these tours was of the Cadbury factory, where the tour guides all dress like umpa-lumpa's in little purple outfits, and we got to see where and how all the different chocolates are made. They were already packaging Easter eggs as they apparently have these in production for up to eight months in advance! The tour was pretty cool (didn't know they transfer all the chocolate around the building in pipes!?) and we got a load of free choccy bars too. At the end of the tour we went inside an empty silo where (just for fun) they have set up a chocolate waterfall and one tonne of chocolate poured down just inches from our faces in only 20 seconds!!
The second tour was of the Speights brewery in the evening. Once again we got shown where and how the different drinks are made, why there is a concrete barrel on top of the chimney (a kid working for the architect drew it on for a laugh without the architect knowing and Mr Speights loved it), and then there was free tasting at the end. We tried all five of the main types of beer and also the special edition chocolate beer, which was just like drinking chocolate syrup - not good!
Tomorrow we are heading on again toward Curio Bay.
