Hervey Bay and Fraser Island were our next stops on our Queensland adventure. After picking up our Toyota Corolla hire car we hit the road. 3 ½ hours later we arrived at Hervey Bay, we planned 4 days here and packed it all in, lots of exercise and touristy bits.
We decided to go on an organized 4wd trip to Fraser Island, the only sand island in the world. The trip consisted of joining 40 other people and a tour guide who liked the sound of his own voice – which was a bit annoying being herded about, but it didn’t take anything away from the experience. Fraser Island is a must for any traveling itinerary. There are no sealed roads on the island – so it is 4wd only and the main highway is an actual beach – 75 mile beach, how weird was that driving up a beach at 100km! We stopped at Ely Creek, Maheno Shipwreck, the Pinnacles, Rainforest, and our personal favourite – Lake Mackenzie – a rainwater later which was simply beautiful!. We could have stayed all day. The highlight of our Fraser Island trip was the scenic flight we went on to the view the Island. Our Vehicle was stopped on the beach drive and a pilot boarded the bus asking if anyone wanted to take a flight, and we were the only two up for it, which meant we had the whole (7 seater) plane to ourselves. This made it even more special and yes romantic. We took off and landed on the beach and it was the first time either of us had been airborne in such a small plane and it was a wonderful experience. The views were amazing and it was such a clear day we could see for miles. We took photos, but its one of those – you just had to be there to, and all for 20 pound each. What a bargain.
Another first for us both – we decided to try horse riding whilst in Hevery Bay. We booked a two hour trek at Susans Homestead and boy horse riding is hard work. Dawns horse was Magnum and Jays was Rocky and we had a really scenic ride, well stroll with a bit of cantering through some lovely countryside stopping at the Susan river for refreshments. Dawn’s horse tended to stay nose to butt to Jays horse and it was obviously the way it had been trained. Jays horse kept peeing and eating at every given opportunity – a bit like its rider so that was a good match, and no before you think it Dawns was not a good match to her - contrary to what you may believe she doesn’t follow Jay around nose to his butt!. Horse riding was fun and something we will definitely do again. We need to master the cantering and being able to say upright in the saddle. Hervey Bay was a fun filled trip. Brisbane next stop.
