We arrived in Melbourne and caught a taxi to the YHA. Our first experience of a Youth Hostel. We stayed in Melbourne for 3 days and boy was it hot. The YHA was ok but lack of air con in the room made it a little uncomfortable, so we didn’t spend much time there. We saw the sights of Melbourne form the Rialto Towers and the Quayside. We also found time to catch up on a film, Music and Lyrics and just generally chilled – lots of walking through a big city and catching the free tourist shuttle bus.
We decided it was time for another campervan adventure and began what was an epic search for a van, 25 phone calls later we had one booked and we were well on our way to the Great Ocean Road. This drive was amazing (as our pics will show) some of the scenery was simply breathtaking. Literature describes this drive as being the best in Australia, and we saw why. We completed the Drive in 3 days and saw the famous Twelve Apostles, London Bridge, The Arch and Blowholes, amongst many other sights.
Our Journey then took us to Philip Island, otherwise known as ‘Penguin Island’. We spent two days here and chilled, saw the sights of the island, including the famous ‘Penguin Parade’ which was a sight to behold – mind you the masses of tourists kind of spoilt the event, however them aside seeing the little fairy penguins emerge from the sea and waddle up the beach to their burrows and their little baby penguins was a real one off experience. We got really close to them and they were not intimidated by us at all. Jay got some good video footage (even though all photographic equipment was banned) he was stealth like in his maneuvers. After Philip Island we made our way north towards Sydney stopping off at some of the many tourist sights, including some waterfalls which were quite a drive in our little campervan, lots of hills, and we also came across a fallen tree which obstructed our journey, luckily it was near the falls, so we walked the rest of the way. We drove over Cliff Bridge which is a coastal cliff and then onward to Sydney.
