Berlin has been at the centre of a number of significant historical events over the last century, so it wasn't a huge surprise for us to find that it is unlike any other city we've visited in Europe so far. It's the largest city by area in Europe (unless you count London as part of Europe), which gives everyone so much room to move but also makes it difficult to see everything. Also, understandably, it has very few old buildings that survived World War II so Berlin is far from quaint cobblestone streets and old style architecture. Whilst there, we went to a few different sections of the Berlin wall, which included comprehensive information about what was happening in the city during those times. The level of detail was great as it caters for those who know nothing of the history but allows for people to dig quite deep into some of the stories and events of the time. We found Berlin to be a very modern city that would appeal to a young hipster crowd. We visited the Sunday flea market which was incredibly popular and clearly the place to be. The flea market even included karaoke in an outdoor amphitheatre that had about 500 people intently watching and cheering for those brave enough to take the microphone. The quality of the karaoke and other performances in the park was pretty impressive and the food and beer on offer made it a great place for us to make our first impressions of the city before reading into the sobering history. We hired some bicycles for our final day to try and see some of the outskirts but the amount of ground to cover proved too ambitious, the city is just that large.
