We quite liked Veliko Tarnovo and it improved our opinion of Bulgaria after staying in Sofia. The old town is quite spectacular and there is a large fortress on a hill overlooking the town. The weather was cold and wet the whole time we were there but the town was beautiful none the less. Again we stayed in a very nice hostel that provided dinner, breakfast, beer and a social common room. The building was a beautiful old cottage in the old town only a minute away...

The best thing about our stay in Sofia was our hostel which provided breakfast, dinner and beer in a common room with tons of other travellers all keen to socialise. Sofia was nice enough with some huge buildings, monuments and statues but we didn't think it was a city to recommend to others.
