Jane and Malc's travels
Hi all
So we are now in Lake Tekapo in the p**ing rain! Never mind. Its far too wet to even consider doing any walks so in sheer desparation this morning we went to feed the mental salmon in the salmon farm. By mental.. I mean hungry I guess as they were all jumping out of the water everywhere!
We went to deer park heights a few days ago and the weather was awesome. The views were amazing. Very Lord of the Rings esque! In fact quite a few of the scenes were filmed there. I have obviously still retained my childhood fear of animals. I got out of the car to feed the little goats (I felt that these were the smallest and less intimidating) and they all ran at me so i threw the feed on the floor and ran! The bison was the size of a small house so i didnt even attempt to get near to that! The closest I got was to a very large black hairy pig with horns which was very welcoming of the food! Malcolm wimped out of feeding the deer as didnt want to get slobber on his hands!
We then headed to Te Anau where we did the trip to Milford sound from. Milford sound for anyone who hasnt already been there is absolutely beautiful and should be a must on your 'places to see' list! It was very rainy (apparently common weather for fiordland) but this turned out to our advantage as the waterfalls were phenomenal! We then went to Wanaka and spent a couple of nights there. The lake is absolutely beautiful and we couldnt resist doing some of the walks around the lake and to the diamond lakes nearby. Wow!
We then headed to Twizel (small village near Lake Pukaki and Mt Cook). The colour of the lake is bright blue (something to do with the flour-like deposits from the melting of the glaciers). Mount cook and the glaciers there were also beautiful with great views from Mt Cook Village. We did a couple of short walks to the glacier lake yesterday. Fingers crossed the weather will clear up today otherwise we are resigned to spending the day drinking speights in the local cafe and rolling back to the hostel later!
Tmrw we have a long drive to Kaikoura for some whalewatching and a search for the real free willy and his floppy fin! Then back to Christchurch to end the trip (booooo!)
Welldone to the twins for their marathon success! Hopefully they are not still walking like a couple of cowboys.
Hope all is well with everyone at home
Lots of love x
