We chose Fethiye as a friend of the skipper was refueling so a chance to catch up for a chat and a few beers.
What a wonderful bay in which this is set, lots of islands and good anchorages.
Fethiye like a lot of this coast, was mostly destroyed by earthquake in 1958.The old part of the town was mainly spared. The hills behind it have numerous large Lycian tombs. The town is attractive as the new building is all low rise.
We went to visit the fish market and archeological museum.
Walking through the old towns there are small streets with pergolas covered in creeper which were a real relief from the heat. There were lots of craft shops also.
The fish market is in the centre of a courtyard in an old single storey building. The market is surrounded by delicatessens and restaurants where you can bring your purchased fish to be cooked. Thats what we decided to do, buy a large Grouper and come back tonight for dinner. Ester also had to buy seafood for our Risotto tomorrow night. There is plenty of good choice. Next door there is a large fruit and veg market, so a ll our food needs are met.
Onto the museum. This has some great exhibits of 6th and 4th cent. BC Lycian funeral goods, jars, jewelry, statues etc. There are some impressive Roman statues including Marcus Arelius and one of his wives.
On the back to the boat we haggle for a backgammon set but they will not come to our price even for three.
Dinner at the market is really great. The restaurant Hilmi is run by a very nice women who advises us on how to cook our Grouper. We have cutlets in a casserole with seasonal vegetables. She also suggests several meze including squid casserole, fried shrimp roles, spinach, and other delicious things. All of the restaurants are packed, it is a great atmosphere.
