This part of the coast is so attractive. Wooded mountains to the sea, lots of islands and bays. MB Marcus and Nora had come here in the early 80's. A lot had changed as many holiday homes have been built.
We anchor in bay 'Bayindin Limani', adjacent to Kas, it's a stunning bay with lots of day boats coming and going.
We take the tender and travel 1.5 kms to the Greek island Kastellorizo. This is a beautiful small harbour with multi coloured houses around the waterfront. This island is special to Australians as a huge number of their population migrated to Melbourne in 1916. There were 15,000 people on the island before they left, now only 300 people. We don't blame them for leaving as this is a very rocky and dry island despite the pretty Harbour. MB had been here in the early 80's with Glen Morley and crew.
We had contacted Jim Politios, the real estate agent MB knew in Brighton, to see if any of his family were still on the island. We found his aunt Betty Theodore in the blue house on the waterfront. She is in her 80's but comes here for 3 months every year together with quiet a few ex islanders from Australia. We had afternoon tea and admired her colourful art. She was very welcoming.
We then inspected the town, but unfortunately the two museums closed at 3 pm and we were too late. After leaving the Harbour we went to find the famous 'Blue Grotto'. We found it, a small slit at the base of the rock mountain. We snorkeled into this large cavern that has iridescent blue light. A beautiful place and well worth the visit.
On our way back to BP we visit Kas, an attractive small town with lane ways and old style buildings. While we enjoy a beer and G and T we bargain for backgammon sets. Bingo! We buy two at the right price.
