We thought that seeing as we were so close to Koh Tao from Phangan, we'd hop over there to do some diving. So did the remaining 5,000 people on the full moon island. We got the early ferry (by this they mean pick you up at 7.30am and don't depart the pier till 11), and managed to get ourselves into a great diving school -'The Simple Life'. This package included 4 nights free accommodation. Our instructor Warren was from Ireland and ironically, studied computer science at uni - see, a very versatile degree! He had been diving for nearly 10 year and so extremely experienced. The only worry was that he turned blue after 5 minutes under water!
The groups here always remained small, so there was never anymore than 3 in a group. We met some nice girls from New Zealand while here. We learnt all our skills in a beautiful shallow bay that had tiny huts built into the mountain that all the rich Thai's stay in on their summer holiday. Our course consisted of 4 dives as well as an exam. The first two were 'confined dives', which we did in this bay. The next 2 were 'open water' dives which is where we went down to 18m. But to go to this dive sight, it meant going 20 miles out to sea, which unfortunately meant puking up over the side of the boat. After this, we were signed off as PADI open water divers.
The coral on these dive sites was amazing. The fish were beautiful, like nothing you had seen before. They were every colour you could imagine. The deeper down you went, the more you'd see. At one site we found and anemone of clown fish. Some we so tiny but as they are so rare, we were lucky to see them. There were eels, reef sharks and sting ray. As well as Bat fish, Tuna, Angle fish, Trigger fish, and Banner fish - the list goes on.
This island was by far the nicest of the three on this coast. It had a real chilled vibe and awesome beach bars lining the beach front, with fire dancers, oil candles and bean bags to sit on every night. It was like being in a diver's paradise - hence the reason we were there 7 nights instead of 4. It really was the simple life.
