Fraser Island (21.08.2012): Awesome day at Fraser Island today. We so have to come back one day to do it properly. We made it half way up the 120km island - the largest sand island in the world. We set off at 7.30am on the 'Fraser Explorer' 4WD truck bus. Being a sand island, it is accessible to 4WDs only. After mounting the ferry at Inskip Point we made the 15 minute journey by sea to Frasers.

Gee it was a bumpy ride! On arriving at the island we travelled down 75 Mile Beach before cutting off inland to Lake McKenzie - a clear sand dune lake with a white beach - very pretty. On the way down 75 Mile Beach we managed to spot a few dolphins jumping out of the sea. I love dophins.

For the whole journey down the beach we drove extremely close to, and sometimes in, the sea. What a ride! I though we were stuck so many times but our driver was a pro.

At Lake McKenzie we had a wee paddle and relaxed by the shore for an hour before alighting the truck again to drive to Central Station where we went for a guided walk around the rainforest (the only sand rainforest in the world).

After lunch at one of the resorts on the island, we headed further up 75 Mile Beach to the Maheno. Shipwreck for a quick photo opportunity and onwards to the coloured sands of the Pinnacles for another. Our driver was a thrill seeker, overtaking all other vehicles and riding the dunes as fast as possible. The ride sure felt like a rollercoaster. Lots of fun though!

Our last stop on Frasers was Eli Creek - a clear stream that runs into the sea. We walked down the stream and then swam back letting the current take us and making sure we watched out for logs! Great lazy river experience - it would have been better than the one at Mataranka if the water had been warmer!

The purest breed of dingoes reside on Frasers (they have not been able to cross breed with domestic dogs). We managed to spot a few of them on the one hour ride back. Everyone went crazy for them but we have seen so many in the outback we were not so excited. Dingoes are pretty kool though. They don't bark at all but rather howl - they are closely related to the wolf despite looking more like domestic dogs.

On arriving back at Rainbow Beach the driver decided he needed more 4WD action and drove us down Rainbow Beach itself which was a great end to the trip. We have met so many Aussies who love their jobs and our driver sure was one of them.

We have just been for a walk down Rainbow Beach for the last time and are packing again for our ride down to Brisbane tomorrow. This time next week we will be in the air!!
