Cairns (Green Island, 07.08.2012): Wow wee. Today we enjoyed a fantastic day at Green Island (Adam's birthday present from his parents). We set off at 9am from the Reef Terminal at Cairns Esplanade on the 'Big Cat' boat. The journey to the island took 1 hour 15 minutes - what a fantastic journey it was. We managed to see several humpback whales - the boat got as close as it could. We even managed to see a synchronised breach of two whales. It was amazing! Sadly my photography skills are somewhat limited. I will put the one dodgy video I have on here at one point. Amazing, amazing creatures.
Green Island is a beautiful coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with island rainforests, surrounded by white sandy beaches & magnificent coral reefs. During the day we went on a glass bottomed boat ride and had a semi submarine trip over the reefs. We had a tasty buffet lunch, walked across the board walks through the rainforest - best of all though we snorkelled through the reefs spotting all types of different marine life including giant clams, giant turtles, and rays. Sadly I didn't find nemo! So pleased we spotted the giant turtles. There are many turtles living around the islands as there is an abundance of sea grass.
All in all, a fantastic day out. I hope to see some more amazing marine life when we go scuba diving tomorrow on the outer barrier reef - very excited! It sure is going to be hard to get back to reality when we get home.
We have just come back from an evening cinema treat to watch the new Batman film - finally. A great end to the day.
