Today we're off out with our housemates, funny enough the Cook family have river boat tickets too and plan to drive there and so offer to take us with them.
They're a lovely bunch form Florida and as we board the boat Bella secures us great seats by the riverside.
The tour is quite good we get to see the Watergate (yes the actual Watergate that the scandal is named after), the Kennedy Centre and the Monument from the river looks fab! We're all talking about the various choppers we've seen and Matt shows us on Google the Presidents two distinct choppers which are long almost oblong shaped - literally seconds later what flies past us in front of the Monument but the Presidents chopper - it's unreal we get great snaps and at one point as it turns right over our heads hovering so low and close we can see the star emblem. Matt's thrilled!!
We jump back into the car and off to check out the Museum of Natural History. It's similar to the New York one in that it has an awful lot of stuffed animals, also a stuffed whale which Jacq doesn't like. We see proper mummies of kids and adults and more dinosaur bones displayed in full - it's pretty cool. We manage to see the Hope Diamond the famous Harry Winston piece, a jeweller Marilyn Monroe refers to in Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend - it looks a lot like the Titanic necklace.
We move into the Museum of American Culture - Jacq really wants to see the original Dorothy shoes, also they have a lot of musical memorabilia and some movie costumes from movies such as My Fair Lady. They have displays from the White House including the many stunning outfits of the First Ladies at inaugurations - Michelle Obamas is definitely the best with her Jimmy Choo shoes. It's fascinating getting to see the dolls houses created for Presidents' daughters going through the years like from Lincoln to Carter - the White House itself was expanded upon with a steel frame and at one point was burnt down - the history is fascinating and we stroll on to check out the transport section. Old school buses and cars as well as the actual stools and bench from the famous protest when brave coloured students refused to get up from so called "white people" seats - they actually have them!! But you can't touch them :( such a remarkable piece of history.
We move on to the White House but the heat's killing us - the humidity here is unreal it's like 35 degrees and Jacqs in a summer dress sweat rolling and mood changing - it's not pretty so we stop for a drink at the Old Elbitt Grill.
This is a pretty historic bar, little did we know, it was moved years ago but officially it's the oldest bar in DC and the premises prior actually had a "president's saloon" where Lincoln hung out. The animal heads hanging on the wall are his and it's so popular in here people are standing by the door queuing to get in.
We luckily grab a seat at the bar with ease as we're not eating and meet Brian from Glasgow and Nicole who is local and moving to Ireland - they both work here and have for a while Brian's been here 20 odd years he says people don't leave because they are well looked after and the tips are unreal. Last year this bar made $28million, it's the 3rd busiest bar in the states and we can see why! By 5pm its booming, everyone has poured in from the streets mostly office workers, it's happy hour on oysters and they are flying out of the kitchen - a bus boy here will walk out with 3-400 dollars tonight just on tips that are split - mental eh?! The guys are awesome Brian's done tons of travelling and is especially fond of Africa he shows us his photo album, amazing animals - elephants, lions, cheetahs - it's awesome and Nicole give us a drink on the house - we love the states!!
We head out and the temperature has dropped so much it's great we're off to the Whitehouse - as we approach it's getting a bit stormy and the clouds over the building are turning pretty dark - we get some snaps - it's not as big as we thought but gorgeous with beautiful red roses outside, but then, all of a sudden, the security are going nuts moving us all across the street. They've moved everyone and those clouds approaching are growing angrier! They begin shouting "run for cover its going to get bad, big storm coming" course we all think it's b******s and Obamas is on his way out so we hang around just because we saw someone exit the building - it's not Obama - a storm does come - Matts in shorts, Jacqs in a dress - we are ruined!!
The rain doesn't gradually arrive oh no - it announced itself with a torrential hammering and the wind is so severe you can see the rain sweeping from right to left as if it's bloody chasing us!! Jacqs hair, makeup, dress - all pointless she's a dripping mess, dress is stuck to her and her hair clumped on her forehead like a sweaty Dingle (Emmerdale reference) Matts so wet he's given in and once we run away from the White House to find shelter he just doesn't bother - stating he can't get any wetter so why not just stick it out and try for a cab. Sadly, everyone has the same idea and none are stopping and then comes the thunder and lightning, proper massive streaks across the sky it's only 6pm! - thank god for Uber.
We jump in and spin off, the poor cab is soaked because of us, proper puddles and typically as we head home it stops - nice!
A quick shower and our amused housemates the Cook family invite us to dinner as it's there last night. Our plans were ruined by the storm so we gratefully accept and walk with them to Toki Underground a Taiwanese restaurant around the corner. Reviews are amazing - it's definitely out of our comfort zone but we go for it trying the chicken noodles - it's pretty different but nice - noodles (Ramen) are thicker and more soup like than what we are used to, served with a soft egg also which is a bit weird - but it's tasty! Matt and Britt have bonded and are wearing matching ty-dye T-Shirts…. Jacq struggles to keep a straight face.
We head home and say our goodbyes they'll leave early in the morning - nice family.
