Having restocked with plenty of supplies and plotted our destination for the next few weeks, we hit the road with Point Samson next destination in the GPS. But...............after a few kilometres, it dawned on us that we would be better off heading down to Karijini National Park, as we wouldn't have to back track as much to fit in all we wanted to see (told Bec is wasn't such a good idea to organise these things over a few beers)

So, we grabbed the GPS off the dash and changed the details to Karijini National Park. But................after a few kilometres, it dawned on us that we hadn't filled the water tanks and the only place to stay was the national park. (at least we had plenty of supplies, including soft drink and beer, and noting Karijini is famous for its gorges and swimming holes............we had showers and drinks taken care of!) So off we headed with our concerns erased.

Karijini National Park is approx 260kms south of Port Hedland, and is unlike any national park we have been to date. What makes it so unique is not it's gorges, but the type of gorges and how and what you need to do to view them. Forget cruisey boat rides or nice lookouts, think bushwalking, rock climbing and wading through waist deep water.

To say the gorges were exciting, yet challenging would be an understatement, but I'll let the boys and mum explain;

Hunter's highlights of Karijini National Park

I especially like the Fern Pool, because it was cold and you could just jump in. Mostly liked swimming across and under the water fall. The pool had hundreds of fish which would nibble the dry skin off your feet. We went on other walks which were hard as we had to walk a long way in water, and it was freezing like ice. Another thing that was good was that we were able to become a junior ranger by completing a book. We got a badge to sow onto our clothes. Also lost a tooth and got $2! But....my favourite thing was that we saw heaps of road trains, including a massive truck which it's load was wider than 2 lanes, and you couldn't pass. As well, the park was full of red dirt, and I was able to make the best, biggest roads to play with my cars and trucks.

At Karijini we did rock climbing and climbed down a hand rail with a ladder and hopped into the coldest water in the world so far. The best thing I liked was Kermit Pool because it was a challenge to get to, as we had to climb down ladders, cross through water as well as do some rock climbing that was really hard and very high up. Mum fell down the waterfall on her bum that was really funny, then we tricked mum into jumping into Kermit Pool as we told her the water was warm when is was actually freezing. She was not happy.

Another good thing was Fern Pool, which has a waterfall. We did walks everyday, some as hard as class 5!

Great place, breathe taking gorges, definitely worthwhile but "won't be doing that again!"
