After spending a few days in Karumba, we have decided to continue our travels towards Darwin by heading to Lawn Hill National Park, passing through towns such as Normanton and the Burke and Wills Roadhouse.
Did you know?
- the largest known Crocodile was caught at Normanton, which measured approx 8.6 metres ! In town, they have made a lifesize copy of the crocodile, which is almost unbelievable. Can't tell you what I would say if I came across a live croc this size (being a family site and all)
- the town of Burke and Wills Roadhouse is just that, a road house!
At Lawn Hill, we stayed at Adele's Grove, which is a caravan type resort just a short drive from the Lawn Hill National Park / Gorge, where you can bring or hire a canoe and paddle up and down the river.
So we all decided (after convincing ourselves there would be no crocodiles in the river) to hire a canoe for a few hours and head up the river. Must say, driving a canoe is not as easy as the instructions make out, although after a few zig zags across the river, we finally worked it out.
Talk about a relaxing, peaceful place. That is, until we realised we had used up almost all our two hour hire time paddling up the gorge, and only given ourlselves 20 minutes to get back. Although we made it back just in time, can't say a career in rowing is in the near (or distant) future.
Other notable events during our Lawn Hill stay;
- Went fishing and caught a few little grunters, although the catches of the day must belong to Bec and Cooper, who both managed to bring in turtles (Bec's by somehow wrapping the fishing line around the poor turtles back leg)
- Went on a sunset bus tour to 'Harry's Hill, a hill no more than 1 kilometre from the park where we were told about the history of the park and watched the sun set whilst having a few nibblies and ales. PS. Got the odd sunset photo as well...think final count was somewhere near 200!)
- Cooked some steaks on the webber for a few hours (we 'ALL' thought that the pack was a roast). Turned out OK :(
