Last nights sleep had been one of the best we've both had in ages, likely down to the air conditioning. I headed off to 7-eleven for breakfast whilst Laura had some fruit and we both took advantage of the free coffee. We headed down to the poolside area early and perched on a couple of available sun loungers. The heat increased very quickly but it was nice just to chill out and actually feel recuperated for a change.... It was actually like being on holiday. At lunchtime we headed to our little, local restaurant and ordered noodle soup which was delicious before returning for a planned afternoon of lounging, reading and swimming.
After lunch we returned to the pool side and took a pew. We got comfortable ready for our chilled out afternoon when a guy above us in the restaurant randomly started talking to us about his problems (we always attract them... I blame Laura). He was opening up to us about the trials and tribulations of everyday life married to a Thai lady and generally his health and everyday problems. Laura noted an infected looking wound on his elbow and said "you carry on with that elbow like that and you will have a problem". He then showed us the injury to his elbow and leg up close which Laura thought was already becoming infected... obviously not helped by his diet of beer and good food... Not forgetting his diabetes which he explained in great detail. The wounds looked like classic moped injuries and sure enough that's what they were. When asked 'how did you manage to come off?' generally concerned. He replied bluntly that 'I was pissed'........ brilliant, what an idiot. We rolled our eyes before Laura went into nurse mode and offered him some TCP which was then duly applied.
We learnt through no choice of our own that he lived up near Pattaya and had a thai girlfriend who he was on holiday with. He was English originally and moved a lot until settling here after retiring. He then followed the age old tradition of getting a thai wife. He explained to us how she was fiery and doesn't always cook for him or do his washing... bless him I thought! Although his response to her poor wife skills? charge her rent, no wonder she's fiery lol... At that point Hannah and her friend Sarah turned up and we gradually focused our conversation towards them and he fell asleep. Hannah had been feeling rotten for the past few days and Sarah was cracking out the baby oil in this heat..... crazy!
We spent time by the pool chatting with the girls about travels and home and before we knew it the sun was starting to set. The English family from yesterday then appeared after they had been out on the mopeds all day exploring the island. They quickly started on the cocktails and beers while me and Laura stuck to soda... we had said we would give up booze and western food for lent as a challenge and we were determined to stick to it. We chatted for a while before we headed for the showers to freshened up and arrived back in time for the sunset.
At this point we were joined by Kieron who we had heard much about from Hannah. They had been travelling together and basically he had been getting wasted in Koh phi phi every night... quite the party animal. One night he had been hit by a glass thrown by a local and suffered a lacerated foot. He required stitches, anti-biotics and regular check ups at the clinic. Was costing him a small fortune and he did not even have travel insurance. He was a good guy though and we had the standard chats on travelling and football. After sunset we all headed around to the restaurant for pad thai and curry which as always was very tasty. Before returning to the bar for the rest of the evening, where the whole gang were chatting and swapping travel advice. We swapped details and agreed to meet up with Hannah in Australia later in her trip before heading to bed past Mr moped and his grumpy thai bride.
