Ian & Claire's Adventure
Day 13
We caught an early bus and spent 6hours passing through Denali to Eilssen visitor centre and back to Sanctuary cmpgroubd inside the park. After just 1/2 hour we saw our first bear, very exciting followed by a Caribou which ran across the road, our bus driver was a very scary woman, telling us bear facts on the way. We saw 9 grizzly bears in total, including one feeding on berries just metres from the road and a large blonde sow with two cubs. As we approached our backcountry area, two people got on claiming thanks to their pepper spray they had survived a bear attack. It made us pretty scared but it turns out they did the wrong thing by walking away, encouraging the bear to follow. At Eillsen we caught a fantastic view of Mount McKinley. On the way back we also saw a wolf in the distance, apparently with cubs.
At sanctuary we met with John and Carol again who recommended a walk down the river again where we were hoping to see a Moose, no luck. We got back cooked a huge meal of pasta to lighten our bear can and then joined Carol and John who kindly treated us to rehydrated raspberry crumble (bear scat pudding) it was really nice. It was fun chatting for a while ad we had our photos taken by the rangers lodge ( remember the nails in the door to stop the bears!) we fell asleep feeling abitnervous about the days before us.
