Another big day on the road, travelling long distances with nothing to see, boy this country is huge.
We finally arrive at Coober Pedy. What an amazing place this is. Driving into Coober all you see are piles of white sand/rock or whatever, that have been dug or blasted out to see if opals are possible. They do hundreds of them about 60cm hole to check it out and if nothing they move on. No need to renew the landscape apparently.
The place is dry and very much lacking grass or gardens. About 85% of the population live underground, which is evident by the ventilation pipes you see all over the place. The underground shops, restaurants and hotels are amazing. I loved it. The temperature stays 20-24 degrees all year around. No need for heating or cooling. They have shops and other places above ground and nearly every shop advertises opals for sale. I was very tempted but my head won out over my heart.
We stayed at a place called "Op Shop". It was a yard at the back of the op shop and was quite small. We were happy to go there as another couple were going also so we had company. It was only $15 a night and we all shared one shower and one toilet. We found it on my IPhone app, WikiCamps - the op shop are not allowed to advertise in town but comments on WikiCamps will continue to give them business.
We toured an underground house and an old mine which was set up with models of the way it would have been back in the 1920's. They even had a miners house set up underground as it would have been back then. We loved it. We always wanted to visit Coober Pedy and it was a good as we expected it would be.
