Yesterday we left Mission Beach and drove our last journey through Queensland to reach the Northern area of the Great Barrier Reef. We are spending the last segment of our trip in Trinity Beach, outside of Cairns.
We drove through the rain to a cute little town named Babinda. It looked fake, like it should be in Disneyworld! It looked like there was going to be a shootout in the street at any moment, It reminded me of a old western movie! It is a tiny little town that is titled the "rainiest city in Australia". True to it's name, it was raining! We went to a local bakery and had pies (Australians love their meat pies!..I will only eat the veggie pies!")
Today we went up the Skyrail to Kuranda. Kuranda is a little tourist village at the top of a beautiful rainforest. The Skyrail is a gondola that you ride up the mountain and skim the top of the rainforest. It is better seen in person because when you look down it is amazing to be able to see the gigantic trees and ferns. They built the Skyrail so most of the rainforest hasn't been destroyed, and it prevents people from leaving their carbon footprint behind with either cars or hiking through the protected forrest. Up in the Kuranda village is not such a good example of eco tourism, it is full of little tourist shops! We enjoyed the gondola ride and love seeing a rainforest area from above.
In the late afternoon, we went to the airport to check out Heli flights for a tour of the reef. Hopefully, on Friday we will be exploring the reef from above! (Weather permitting!)
It is very warm and humid here, and they say this is winter! Even being from Florida, I have to say it is very wet and humid! The bugs are around too! I am glad have some anti-itch cream!
We will post more soon....xoxo
