After breakfast at hostel on ometepe, all ready to pay the owners for a taxi to the ferry port, with a stop off at some springs. That was until the rapscallion of a son went back on his earlier word, claiming we had only paid for the taxi on first day and not the first night's stay. So after an argument involving all the family (which was rather large), we paid them the money anyway (the mother was very nice after all) pulled our bags from their car and opted for a couple of rattling chicken buses to the ferry instead. In the heat of 'battle' had forgotten to give in the room key, so then had to try and explain in our best spanish to the woman at the ferry port to give the key back to the wheeler dealer with the silly pony tail and earrings in the red pick-up when he next came to lure some weary travellers back to his not so brilliant hostel.
On alighting the ferry fought off the usual claims that there were no buses or that they were more expensive than a taxi, to jump in a collectivo to Rivas, then bus to San Juan Del Sur, checking in to a nice rickety old hotel on the seafront with balcony overlooking the bay - rather attractive given the boats, the palm trees, the surfers, the wide beach and the cliffs (complete with Christ the Redeemer look-a-like).
Worked off fish n chips at beachfront cafe with a game of beach volleyball with some gringos working in the town. Then explored a bit, booking surf and Spanish lessons for the next day.
Atmospheric Mediterranean restaurant (supposedly best in town) before collapsing wearily in to bed, listening to the waves lapping up the beach .... (before we turned the really loud fan on).
