Firstly yesterday... A failed attempt for out glacier trip. The weather was horrific... Electricity was in and out and it poured rain all day with flashed if lightning and cracks of thunder. Laura and I spent the day drinking tea with our duvets covers and watched frozen! Very apt.
However today the sun was shinning and wind died down. We turned up at the glacier centre to check in and fill out the necessary forms before we got kitted out with boots, trousers, coats and crampons (spikes to wear over our boots to enable us to walk on the ice).
Once kitted out we got on the helicopter. I've only ever been on one helicopter years ago... I seemed to remember not enjoying it and this ride confirmed it! I do not like being in a small bubble in the air!
We spend 2 hours exploring the glacier and it's many caverns. The guide Jaggered (apparently his younger sister named him) led the group, cutting steps in the ice as we went when the ice got too steep. It was incredible! The recent rain had left the glacier a magnificent blue colour coveted by snow. Apparently we were very lucky as conditions so beautiful and low down are rate. We learnt about the glacier including it's formation and the fact that within 40 years they expect the glacier to have disappeared!!! A crazy and saddening thought! Just as we were about to leave a cavern, Jaggered advised we gather together snow balls.... So armed with snow balls we left the Cavern to be pelted with snow balls by the guides who worked on the ice without tour groups. We retaliated but they had the higher ground so a massive advantage.
We then began to head down the glacier and back to base via helicopter.
The rest of the day was spent warming up and chilling out. Was quite a tiering few hours but well worth it and would have been so disappointed had we not gotten the opportunity.
