The past few days have been much the same in terms of weather ... Rain and lots of it! 400mm in the space of 48 hours.
It began on Thursday when we had a trip to Milford sound. It took 3 hours to get there and 3 to get back, including going through a tunnel down a mountain which took 20 years to build. Was amazing watching the car infront disappear down the hill... Almost like a roller coaster. Woooo.
On arriving in Milford we boarded the "Jucy Cruise" to see the many water falls flowing into the waters. We were both lucky and unlucky. The recent rain meant that the waterfalls were in full flow however we has rain and very pour visibility so couldn't see the higher falls.
Friday was an interesting day... :/. We were up at 6am to walk 15 minutes in the torrential rain to meet our coach. Soaked was an understatement! The driver had semi joked about what had happened last time they had such rain but said no more. About an hour into the trip we stopped at Cromwell for a comfort break. As the driver boarded the coach he gave us all a sympathetic smile and informed us "it was happening again" turns out as last time there was this much rain, the road into Fox and Franz Glaciers had been shut due to flooding and fear if landslides. Off back to queenstown where we spent the rest of the day watching Videos (yup actual video tapes) and napping.
Today we boarded the coach on attempt two to reach Franz Josef and I'm glad to say I am currently sat on the coach and have passed through the re opened road! Driver number too is a tad eratic with speedy corners and no awareness of which side of the road he belongs on ... All whilst driving through torrential (and I mean TORRENTIAL) rain, thunder and lightning.
Assuming we survive this driving and make it into Franz Josef, we are booked on a glacier your tomorrow. However this will be weather dependant as we are relying on a helicopter to deliver us to the Glacier. Luckily we have a few days to play around with... Would be such a shame to come all the way to New Zealand and miss out on the glaciers. Unfortunately the current forecast isn't set to improve but we are crossing our fingers for good news! I shall keep you updated :)
