We went to the Addo elephant park but there werent that many elephants more kudu and warthogs but it was still good for our first game drive and we managed to see a family of elephants which was cool. That night we stayed at a really lovely campsite where the place had massive comfy sofas in a room that also had lots of DVDs we could watch. When we went to bed we could each take a hot water bottle to bed which was good as camping was so cold. In the morning we forgot about ours and packed it away with the tent we felt bad but it was useful and did keep us warm.
The next day we just drove all day in the minivan. We were supposed to stay at Bloemfontein but we wanted to spend actual time in Jo'burg and the way this was planned out we wouldn't have any. This is because this part of the tour was brand new so we were just testing it out although Eddie said that things would still have to be changed becvuase we were in a minivan and this would be much faster than a big truck. This was our coldest night as we stayed literally in a campsite with no shelter from the wind. We did get treated to a takeaway which was nice. In the morning there was ice all over our tents and it was freezing to pack away.we didn't think Africa would be cold. We were all underprepared.
We carried on to Jo'burg where I did the soweto tour with Ben and Jen but it was the biggest rip off and not very good. Its not really a shanti town now only like 100 people are still in shantis as there houses are still being built so it was just like driving round a normal town. We saw many a terrible shanti town driving through Africa but because Soweto is so internationally renowned they have been sorted out first. We did get to see Mandelas house though which was cool. We also went to a museum that was dedicated to the Soweto uprising in 1976. It was really interesting and a really good museum. There was also a memorial outside to the 176 people that died in the uprising that were mostly high school students. After this we had a drive around Jo'burg to see some of it and also got to two massive water towers that have graffiti all over them they are like a giant piece of art. You can bungy and rock climb on them but none of us did- Ben and Jen had both just done one and I was too chicken.
We had three new people join the tour called Keiran, Charlie and Patrik. We are all birtish apart from Patrik who is Swiss. We got to see the truck for the first time and it is huge it seats 28 but there are only 8 of us!
