The plane we got on was huge and we got 3 seats to ourselves, we had so much choice of free drinks, we even got to choose Pepsi or coke as a mixer. The food was nice on the flight, a lot better than usual plane food. We had hundreds of new films and tv shows to chose from which helped the flight go a bit quicker. In Dubai airport we got a McArabia from mcd's which was quite nice and a chicken big mac, just because we could. All the shops in the airport were gold shops, jewelery shops, and designer clothes shops which meant we couldn't afford anything. After a 3 hour wait we got on the next plane which was a lot smaller and wasn't really as good but we kept the blankets, pillows and nap kits for the trip.
When we arrived in Cape Town, we decided to get a transfer as we had nearly $2000 in our bag. We drove past masses of slums just outside the airport which was shocking. We arrived at the hostel which was ok but in a bit of a rough area but table mountain was right outside the window, had a lazy day just went to town and got something to eat from the main street.
Next day we did the bus tour because everything was shut and there was no other way of getting around. On one side of the mountain we felt rich being on the tour bus going through very very poor areas, but on the other side felt poor being on the bus amongst people in Ferraris and in five star hotels, it was a surreal contrast within the same city. We went up half of table mountain but it was around 20 pounds to get the cable car up to the top and we didn't think it was worth it. We also went by the coast and got off the bus at Victoria and Alfred harbour not Albert like people assume something I learnt on the bus tour. Even lonely planet called it Victoria and Albert. The harbour was pretty and we bought some souvenirs as they were cheap which was lucky as we had no chance to buy them in the rest of South Africa. After the harbour we got back on the bus and then got off by the museums and parliament buildings. The natural history museum was only 1 pound with a student card so we decided to go in. There was some massive whale models in the middle of the room and other things about geological info of South Africa and also about dinosaurs that inhabited the country. Later we got food in a kebab house and went to bed for an early night as the next morning we had to meet the tour at 8am and would have to make our own way there. When we woke there was no one in the hostel at all which meant we had to leave the key without getting our deposit back, at the meeting point, the hostel was a lot nicer than ours, but also about five times the price. Here we met Eddie, the tour leader and jen, ben and holly, the other guys on our tour.
