After a very basic continental brekkie, caught the No 47 bus just up the road on Van Ness down to Fishermans Wharf and walked the short distance to Pier 33 for our departure on our pre-booked Alcatraz tour.
What an incredible day! Quite mind boggling - informative and fascinating. The 45 minute audio tour was brilliant. Despite plenty of fog and chilly - this is a spectacular city. Fog lifted somewhat during morning so even the Golden Gate Bridge was partially visible on our return trip. Wandered back down to Fishermans's Wharf and enjoyed our first American hot dog - Mum would be proud that I even had sauerkraut! Sensational! Pretty excited that we found some fresh fruit at last too! After some difficulty we finally found the car rental office to exchange our GPS - now all good to go! Then on the "hop-on-hop-off" bus! Fabulous! Brilliant view of this quite unique city. Got to see all that we wanted - Union Square, Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies, Golden Gate park and a return trip across the bridge (still under fog). After a wander down Union street to sort out sim cards, caught the no 45 bus up to Lombard Street and walked to the top of the "crooked street". Unreal!
Strolled back down to Polk street - so many restaurants - but found a terrific one called "Steet". I had superb crab and shrimp cakes - apparently well known here. Beautiful! And, bought some more fresh fruit on way back home.
