We didn't head off from our Pacific Heights Inn till about 930am - down Lombard Street and over the Golden Gate Bridge. No surprise that it was still engulfed in fog but worth the stop at the vista point on the northern side to view back over the bay and city. Only a short drive down to the touristy town of Sausalito - although not that small still quaint and evidently very popular. About another half hour or so on a windy, sometimes hairy though scenic journey to the Muir Woods. Absolutely amazing - the Californian redwoods are so incredibly majestic and this setting is so picturesque and serene. So worth the visit. Our journey continued, though not very far, to Sonoma - and now Raym was really in his element. Felt like a taste of Tuscany with the beautiful vineyards and the architecture! After calling in to the visitors centre in Sonoma decided to head straight across (not far) to Napa and easily found somewhere to stay. Quick visit out to a few wineries! OMG! Very impressive and quite opulent - loved "the Black Stallion"; and "van heyden" was certainly quirky. But things work differently in the US! You pay for wine tastings at the cellar door, or at the many wine tasting lounges in town, representing the 370 wineries in the region. Incredible! All a top experience. Enjoyed a Latin American meal in this lovely town that thrives on food and wine. The young crowd in the restaurant joining in a trivia night made us feel that we don't only come from another country; I thought perhaps hemisphere, but Raym reckons planet!!
