Had a lovely brekkie at Sweetie Pies bakery down on riverfront - parfait of fruit, granola and yoghurt. Left Napa about 1030.
Miles of wind farms between Suisun City and Rio Vista. Once out of wine country the terrain became very flat. Crops everywhere, predominantly corn, turf, eating grapes, olives, peaches, melons, tomatoes - corn and more corn! Crops come right up to edge of highway - no fences.
Crossed over Sacramento river near Rio Vista; then city of Stockton - massive, sprawling metropolis of 291,000.
Countryside became drier and bare; crops gone - now cattle; turkey farms- tree covered hills undulating in distance.
Lake Tulloch area - meandering picturesque lake dotted with modern upmarket residential communities.
Highway 120 continued on to Groveland on edge of Stanislaus State Forest - quaint little town where we found the oldest saloon in California! Had to stop and have lunch! Unreal!
We thought the scenery was great until we hit the entrance of Yosemite National Park after Big Oak Flat. To say our journey along the Tioga Road, which is closed between November and May due to snow, was breathtaking is the ultimate understatement! Truly amazing! Massive granite cliff faces and majestic giant sequoia trees contrasted with meandering streams and lakes. Our highlight was probably the view from Olmsted Point to the Half Dome and Clouds Rest. The $20 charge to travel the continually winding road perched precariously on the cliff faces reaching altitudes over 9000 feet was worth every cent!
Left the Park and turned off to the little hamlet of Lee Vining, staying tonight at Murphys Motel. Wandered up the road to "Bodie Mikes" for a great feed of ribs and chicken; and met a lovely couple from San Diego
