Ok.. let me update you from where I last was..
Yesterday we got the cable car up into the mountains around Quito... Its very high and felt like I was walking in the clouds which is very awesome. We got lucky as we got pretty good weather for it because the views are really amazing looking down on Quito and the surrounding hills and the snow capped volcano on the other side of the city, often the clouds are to low to make the best of the view. I have taken some more pictures while I was there but I can´t put them online because the computer is having a little bit of a melt down.. but as soon as I can I will.
Today we got up very early and got our bags packed in excited anticipation of our trip to the Galapagos, having seen some of the pictures from other hostelers who have been out there we couldn´t wait to go. Just before we left the hostel Toby checked the news and weather to find, as I´m sure you all know by now that Japan has suffered a massive earthquake, 8.9 infact, and all around the ocean people have been waiting to find out if they will also become victims of the earthquake in the resulting Tsunami. A sad knee jerk reaction to a word that nobody even knew before the disaster of 2004.
We were picked up for our ride to the airport as nobody knew yet what the expectations were with regards to our flights. On arrival at the airport there were swarms of people hanging out around the Galapagos departure gate, it was not looking good and after an hour or so it appeared that all flights were cancelled pending further information. Somewhat folornly we made our way back into Quito and asked Mat (the hostel dude) for our beds back. So today apart from a short trip to the airport... very exciting for plane spotters I´m sure, all we have done is hang out at the hostel (and it´s phone) until we heard late afternoon that with a little luck (and a helpfully pushy travel agent) we should be going out to the galapagos tomorrow on one of the afternoon flights, we should still be able to catch the boat and are hoping to extend our return flight by one day so that we can still visit lonesome George and his giant Tortoise friends.. crossed fingers x
Thats all .. love me x
