Saturday was Prague Round 2. We had a mini sleep in and started the day at around 10am. We decided to drive out across the river to the castle. We had quite a bit more success at doing this than we had the day before. We planned our route in Google Maps before hand and had very little problem getting where we wanted to go.
The castle was great. We bought entry into 4 parts of it; the cathedral, palace, basilica and the golden lane. St Vitus Cathedral was amazing as tends to be the case with cathedrals. Grand on both the inside and outside. The palace lead into a ball room with some small rooms off to to the side. One of these was a balcony with a great view. One other was a feast hall. It was OK, nothing all that exciting. The basilica was pretty well completely boring. The best part though was the golden lane.
Unfortunately we managed to lose the girls here. They went off into some souvenir store or something while we went into the lane. We waited around for them for about 10 minutes and then decided to just go on ahead. This was a real shame because they missed out on a lot of great stuff. Including shooting a crossbow. After this we saw a little bit of torture stuff which was kinda cool. Then we got some great group shots looking over the city.
Well at least we tried to get some great group shots overlooking the city. It seemed to be completely beyond the people we asked to take our photo to actually get a shot of us with the city in the background. One of the ones we got back was so zoomed in that even our faces were almost cut out of the photo. We finally did manage to find someone who could take a decent photo after asking 3 or so people.
So then we left the castle and went to go see the monastery and Petřín Tower. This of course meant some more driving. And of course we couldn't drive anywhere without getting a bit more lost, going down a few wrong roads and breaking half a dozen road rules. But we managed to get where we wanted to go and grabbed such lunch before heading up to the monastery.
The lunch was pretty crap. The girls ordered a pork and chicken schnitzel which looked pretty damn good. Me and the guys ordered a mixed sausage dish we was pretty crap. It was basically just a chopped up frankfurt. It tasted ok though. But then they brought bread to our table and the other guys asked for some ketchup, and that's when the trouble started.
They charged us for 5 servings of bread and 5 servings of ketchup despite no one eating the bread (nor did we ask for it) and only the other guys using any ketchup. We were able to talk them down to only charging us for 2 servings of ketchup.
Then the monastery was pretty crap too. It was closed, you had to pay to go up the tower (which wasn't as tall as the Petřín Tower anyway) and the brewery had a private function. So that over we went to the tower which was about a 20 or so minute walk away.
We also had to pay for this, but it offered a great view over the city. Though for some stupid reason the top lookout bit was surrounded by glass and panelling obscuring the great view. Better views were actually had at the mid point lookout or even from the stairs on the way up or down.
The drive home was as eventful as ever. After driving around lost for a bit and then having no luck with the map, we found our way back to the place we ate lunch at as we had the wifi password for their internet. So we put in the address to our hotel and were on our way. After a bit we actually recognised that this was the same way the police had escorted us home the previous night.
After some drinks we went back out. We went to a brewery called U Fleku which has been brewing beer for 500 years. Today they only brew a single beer, and fantastic dark beer with a bit of a coffee flavour. Unfortunately as happens to be a habit of ours, it was already 10pm when we got there and they informed us that the kitchen closed at half 10 and the bar at 11.
Good thing they were efficient. As soon as we sat down they were already bringing beers around and plonking them in front of us. Then for food they gave us a choice between like 5 items. They didn't even give us a menu or tell us prices. I got the pork knuckle, the others all got the housemade sausage. I don't think anyone was disappointed with their choice, the food was amazing. As was the beer, quite easily the best I've tasted on this trip I'd say.
The other thing of note about this place was that there was a guy playing an accordion. He was probably the happiest most cheerful guy I've seen in my life. His smile and overall demeanor combined with his accordion playing made it impossible to be anything but insanely happy. If you were depressed you could have walked into this room and be instantly cheery. This is definitely a place I would recommend to anyone who visits Prague.
After this we didn't really have any solid plans. We knew of a few clubs we kinda wanted to check out, but mostly we were just wandering around to see if we could find "the place to be". Along the way we started running into people trying to find places. For some reason we decided we would be able to help them. Between us we had English, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish and some German. We were directing people from all over the world. And somehow we actually knew most of the places these people wanted to go.
The girls decided to go off with some group of German guys on a bucks night or something. So now it was a boys night out. After a short walk we found a place with a huge group of very loud people out the front. The place was called N11 and most of the people had shirts saying Prague Pub Crawl, or something to that effect. This looked like it would be fun. After paying to get in because we didn't have the pub crawl wristband (which was being very closely monitored by a guy who was like 7 foot tall) it turned out the place was s***. We left after a very brief time.
At some point we found ourselves in the old town square. And this is where we saw a very bizarre thing. There was a group of guys walking around together. One of them had pants on with circles drawn all over them, and a price listed in each circle. You could pay that price to cut the circle out of the pants. And he was actually getting plenty of people to do it. Why you would pay to do that I have no idea, but hey, whatever...
After this we went to Lucerna which is an 80s/90s club. Playing music from the 80s and 90s along with the film clips on a huge screen. This was a pretty cool place with a large dance floor and like 3 stories, one of which you could just sit at overlooking the dancefloor. We just chilled there and had a few beers.
Overall it was a good day with some of the highlights of the trip along with a few disappointments.
