After the delightful site at Ahakista, I left Sheeps Head peninsular and drove on to Mizen Head. I paid to go into the Signal station and walked over the bridge. The hurricane force winds made it even more exciting at Ireland's most southwesterly point with views across to Fastnet.
I now discovered that WAW actually starts at Kinsale which is south of Cork.
So I backtracked along the beautiful southern coast to lovely Kinsale. I wild camped next to Fort Charles after enjoying the best fish and chips ever.
The next day I drove back to Bantry as direct as possible to start the WAW in the northerly direction. Had a wander around the town and a banter with some locals. I can't stress how friendly the people are. They seem to have a calm confidence and fire loads of questions at you.
Leaving Bantry I stopped for lunch at a tiny beach reached by a very steep track. After worrying about it, the van managed it no problem at. This later caused me to be overconfident.
I stopped to take a boat trip to Garnish island which has some beautiful Italian style gardens and a Martello tower. The boatman was flirting with me and said that I could camp at the pier overnight. I declined. Maureen O'Hara has a large house nearby. I was surprised that she was still alive. She is now 95 and is in America.
Speaking to a tour leader on returning I mentioned that I was reading McCarthy's Bar. She told me about the one in Castletown Bere. So that is where I headed.

Further west on the peninsular I was planning to take the cable car to Dursey island but there was a 2 hr wait so I carried on to Allihies again amazing scenery with remains of old engine houses for the copper mines. Rather like Cornwall. The German couple had told me about a special place near Allihies called the arches. When I asked a lady if she could tell me the way. Her first response was very Irish 'Have you been there before?'
I never did find them but the scenery was stunning but difficult to see as the road or rather track was narrow and winding.
The next night I camped off the road by the water in Portmagee. There were no boats going to the Skellig Islands as it was too rough. Had a Guinness in a bar and chatted to a friendly young couple from Chicago.
Continued following WAW to Killarney YHA.
