After waking up wet (feeling like we were in the Lake District) we set off on a 800km journey to Coober Pedy which is famous for its opal mines and underground village. We arrived there at 5pm in the 51 degree heat- no wonder the houses are all underground! We were shown down a mine and round an underground house by a woman who had been an opal miner all her life. She knew how to make dynamite at the age of 5 (she used to help her dad) and was quite proud of the fact that she was an explosives expert, very scary!!!!!!!!!
After an unsuccessful attempt to find some opals ourselves we went for a delicious pizza and an even more delicious beer. We slept in an underground bunk house for the night- very cool!
Only three more days to go.
