Getting lost while exploring
Had a horrendous sleep our final night in Meixco, possibly excitement for flying to Cuba the next day and also because loud music was being played outside and the noisy air con unit (and concern that it might cause an electrical fire). Got to airport super early as there was no traffic at 4.30am. Check in went way quicker than domestic and then we relaxed in a cafe for breakfast and then browsed the duty free. It was another excellent Interjet experience, really impressed. Land in Cuba and Sam started to get exited as he saw the old cars. Grabbed a yellow state owned cab to take us to our air bnb. He got a bit lost once we got into old Havana and he had to navigate through bicycle cabs and people. He even had to reverse down whole streets a few times. As we were at an intersection an older man came to window and said "Melissa?". It was our hosts father out on the street waiting for our arrival. We have decided he is Cuba's version of Bill Harris. Cuba Bill helped us up the five flights of stairs with our luggage and we met Amaya our host. She was still cleaning the apartment after her last guests as we had arrived hours earlier than actual check in. She was so welcoming and pointed out directions from our private balcony. We left our stuff while they finished cleaning and went to explore the streets. Our apartment is in a prime location, it's so close to everything. By that stage my stomach was eating itself so I needed food asap. It was so humid so I wanted something in the shade and we pretty much ate at one of the first places we came across which was right by the cathedral....so in hindsight was pricy. However the meals were delicious and the cervesa's were cold. A guy playing music at the restaurant came over as we were eating our meals demanding a tip, which was annoying and I explained we were in the middle of eating. So he said okay tip after, I just said yes so he'd go away. He didn't play anymore music and I didn't give him a tip. It is one of my pet peeves when people demand tips, I think it goes against the principle of tipping, which I happily do when it is deserved. Walked around for a while and Cubans kept trying to hustle us. Went into a ****** little museum/art gallery that was filled with photocopies and cost us 2CUC each. Ended up at the park area where old taxis park up offering tours around the city. Sam was absolutely loving it and a guy gave us a discount on a hour ride in a blue convertible Buick. This was awesome, the driver was really friendly and pointed out all the landmarks. We saw a lot in the hour. The driver tricked us that he was buying majianna from a guy selling it on the side of the road. He kept trying to give us some and we kept saying no, nah we are good. He was laughing and laughing and I suspected there was a catch so I took it from him and turned out they were salted peanuts. After the ride we started walking towards our apartment looking for places to get a cheap drink each as I didn't bring enough currency with me after the pricy lunch and tour. A friendly Cuban started talking to Sam and dragged us into a bar, I thought cool, but then he tells Sam to ring a bell a few times and wants to charge him. Thankfully he didn't ring it and we told the guy we had no money. Then as he'd been talking to Sam about dancing he dragged us to dance school trying to sign us up. We again said we had no money and went on our way. Continued on our search for cheap drinks, but the previous pushy sales Cuban has kinda ruined our vibe. Found a little bar with nice staff, ordered a couple of beers and sat at a bar leaner by the window to people watch. Consistently got begged for money, including a blind man who stood right at the window for ages making us feel uncomfortable. All of this was quite overwhelming and the heat had got to us so went back to our apartment to lay down in the air con for a bit. Went to a cheap nearby pizza joint once the sun went down and ordered a pizza and beers. Afterwards went to Hotel Raquel to enquire about tickets to the cigar factory, but they only sold them Mon to Fri. The concierge suggested we have a cocktail on the rooftop. Got up there expecting a bar but we had the place to ourselves. They delivered our mojitos and we took in the sights from high up, before a few other couples came up. Had a pretty early night as we were exhausted.
