Gerard's Travels
Another rainy start to the day today, and despite best attempts to have a little bit of a sleep in, by the time 7am rolled around I was wide awake again. A little annoying really. And it wasn't like there was any excitement for clogs today either, because we were heading back out to Beverwijk to meet another one of Dad's cousins. We all know the lack of clogs in that place from yesterday, so didn't expect much! We headed out and found a little cafe on the canal for some breakfast. On the way, Daniel and I decided that to fit in, we should make up a word that sounds Dutch and put it in our sentences when talking to Dad. Our made up Dutch word is 'schlaucheijkn', which is pronounced 'shlaken', but I feel to be a justifiably Dutch word it also needs to be spelt ridiculously. After we finished breakfast, we jumped on the tram that took us right into Amsterdam Centraal, got our tickets and headed off to Beverwijk again. It's about 40 minutes there, but has free wifi on the train (called WiFi in de trein), so it's good time to reconnect with those I miss! Wish it was a longer trip! We got off the train in Beverwijk, and rather than walking the epic distance yesterday to a house, Dad's cousin Hans, and his wife Honey (another bear reference), met us at the station to take us out for lunch. Like Wil and Bep yesterday, they barely spoke a word of English. What's more, they rode their bikes in from their house near a canal to the station (they don't own a car) - so Dutch!! Had they been wearing clogs, my life may have been complete. But no, just more disappointment. We had lunch at a restaurant near the station. We had croquets, which are like a deep fried crumbed chicken mince type thing, that you cut in half and put on top of some bread. It looked simple, but was really nice! The conversation just flowed and flowed... between Dad, Hans and Honey at least. Daniel and I smiled and nodded every now and then, and threw in a couple of discrete 'schlaucheijkns' to each other, to keep up appearances! More seriously, it was really nice to meet them, and there was enough English there for us to at least be able to connect a bit, even if we couldn't get their life story! After lunch we bid them farewell as they jumped on their bikes and headed for home, while we jumped on the train back to Amsterdam. When we got back, we discovered that the sun actually does exist in Amsterdam, and it was turning into a beautiful day. We decided to jump on a boat and do a canal cruise and take advantage of it. The cruise took us out into the harbour, and then we entered the canal system and wound our way through them. They're so historic, and it's so beautiful seeing all the old buildings lining them. And it was so tight navigating around them, the captain even had to do 3 point turns at some places to get around! As it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the canals were full with people cruising along. And they had varying degrees of sailing ability. All of a sudden a little boat carrying a few young blokes and plenty more beer popped out from another canal and collided with our boat. It was hilarious watching our captain leap up and bark out Dutch insults in their direction. Schlaucheijkn. We completed a circuit around the canals, some of which were built in the 1700's, and made our way back to the beginning. We didn't see them all because there's like almost 100 of them, but we got the gist of it, and they were beautiful. With the mid afternoon sun beating down, we walked back to one if the nice places we saw from the boat, on Brewery Canal (it was seriously called that because of all the breweries that used to exist there) and found a little bar for some drinks. We ordered a Dutch tasting plate full of cheeses and even beef tartare, and soaked up the afternoon, moving to a few different places on a slow crawl back to our apartment. After a quick break and freshen up, we headed back towards the centre much the same way we left it, little pubs by the canals! As it got darker we were a little peckish, a little more drunk, and decided it was time to try European McDonald's. Classy I know. But it did get classier, to the point that McDonald's looks like a 5 star dinner, because after another couple of pubs, Daniel and I decided to take Dad to a sex show in the Red Light District! Wow! I'm not really sure where to start describing it, but it's fair to say I think Daniel and I were glad we were pretty drunk when we were sitting, with Dad, watching a couple of people going hammer and tong just 20 metres away! After a few different 'performances', and approaching midnight, Dad decided it was time for him to go home! Daniel and I stuck around for a little longer at the show, before hitting the Red Light District again. Daniel had 30 € he didn't want to spend, the normal rate for a girl is 50 €, so he just wanted to try bargain some girls down to his level. We skipped from pub to window, window to pub, and Daniel approached so many girls trying to get them to 30 €. They wouldn't budge, responses ranged from 'go get more money', 'go **** yourself', 'go **** your buddy' - a lot of no's really. The best response was the girl who took the money, Daniel thinking she'd accepted, then her slamming the door in his face. She opened it up and gave it back, but his initial expression was priceless. With the night approaching 2am, we stumbled to a taxi, managed to point our way home, and crashed into bed. Day 3 done schlaucheijkn.
