Gerard's Travels
We had a couple of new definitions for excited this morning! After saying our sad goodbyes at home on Wednesday night, we made our way to the airport and got there pretty early. New excited definition 1: The early arrival paid off, we got the emergency exit row all the way to Dubai! Little bit of relief knowing we'll still have operational legs (dare I say a leg to stand on...) when we get to Dubai! So after we dumped our bags and it was getting close to midnight, we had a bit of time to kill so decided to have our first beers! New excited definition 2: We get our pints, have a cheers to the trip, and you can pretty much see the excitement spread all over Dad as it dawns on him that he's taking his sons to Europe and The Netherlands to see his family. It literally enveloped him. Never mind that he hasn't also realised that that's a whole month of us hassling and annoying him like we do, a whole month in close proximity to us! That'll dawn on him soon enough; for now he can have his excitement. After going through the international doors and a couple more beers near our gate, we headed off on the 8 hour flight bound for Kuala Lumpur, a short break, then 7 hours to Dubai. Sadly, I didn't really get any meaningful sleep, so it was a long journey. Felt bad reclining the seat given we had the extra leg room! We had a couple of hours in Dubai Airport, it was hot, then we were on the plane again for the final 7 hours to Amsterdam. There was a lot of dutch speak. Confusing. Had a few Heinekens to get us in the mood! We touched down in Amsterdam a little after 8pm local time, same day as we left, so was a big day. Dad's uncles, Wim and Humphrey (not B. Bear), met us as we left the airport, which was a great surprise. It was the first time I'd seen them since I was 2, and the first time ever for Daniel. Although, they did tell Mum when they were last in Australia that she was pregnant with him. Which she was, 6 months in, but she never knew. No wonder he's so ******. They helped us to a taxi, I almost got run over because the cars go on the wrong side of the road here, and the taxi took us into Amsterdam to our accommodation, where we met the bloke who gave us the key and went to bed, totally exhausted!
