Gerard's Travels
Woke up early again this morning, must've been the fresh enthusiasm to seeing someone in clogs! After breakfast we headed across the city, following the canals, to an Australian pub, as we sort've wanted to watch the Geelong game of footy, and found that they showed it! Sat and watched it, and were happy we're on the other side if the world when we lost! Worse, we still hadn't seen anyone in clogs. So disappointing. We made our way down to Amsterdam Centraal and caught a train out into the country, as Dad had called his cousin and said he'd like to visit and introduce us. We headed to a town called Beverwijk, don't ask me how to pronounce it. It was only 20km from Amsterdam, but they called it full on country. I would've thought suburb. Turns out Amsterdam is ridiculously tiny, after 5 minutes on the train you're in the 'country'! Sadly, the country here didn't offer any clogs either, so annoying. No clogs, lots of English; who are these people, and what did they do to the Dutch? My faith was restored somewhat by Dad's cousin Wil, and his wife Bep, who barely spoke a word of English, so we had some enthralling conversations...! Lucky Dad's fluent in Dutch so he got us by, kept us a little in the loop. For all Daniel and I knew they could've disliked us! Lucky actions speak louder than undecipherable words, and when plate after plate of food came out as they entertained us, we knew we must've sort've been liked at least! Although a lot of it was raw fish and biscuits, which turned Daniel off a bit. I tried some, even some herring, and it wasn't so bad. Plus they kept bringing beer. The most amazing thing of the day though was seeing a Dutch house, seeing how Wil and Bep operate and live, and realising just how much it was like Oma and Opa from what I remember growing up. Took it for granted then, but now realise exactly that it was really their cultural thing! The afternoon bled into the night, and Wil and Bep's son Dennis came over with his 2 year old son Riley who's learning to speak Dutch, English and Finnish - smart ****. After a couple more beers and some soup for dinner, Dennis offered to drive us back into Amsterdam as he had to work there that night. We got back to Amsterdam, Daniel called it quits as he was tired, and Dad and I had another couple of drinks by the canal before heading back, via the kebab shop, home! Day 2 down!
