Gerard's Travels
Woke up early, which sucked given the massive day yesterday. But it gets light really early, and the excitement of seeing people in clogs must've gotten to me, so I was awake! We got up, got ready, and were ready to explore. We decided to walk into Central Amsterdam this morning, a few kilometres, to soak it all up, which wasn't hard to do because it was raining. There are canals everywhere, and it's absolutely beautiful! We stopped in a little cafe for some breakfast, Dad did the talking, although as soon as the lady knew we only spoke English she spoke to us in English. Sadly no sign of anybody in clogs yet. There are a s***load of bikes though. Continued into the centre of the city all the way to the station to arrange transport tickets for the next few days, and the place got even more beautiful. It's so old, and so many buildings lean so much! But maybe that's because the builders could've all been stoned when building them, not because of the buildings' age! There are coffee shops for pot everywhere! We headed back around the city via the Red Light District, and that was a bit of an eye opener! Vibrators, fleshlights, every sex toy imaginable in shop windows, sex shows, and girls of all shapes and sizes right there, in the window, willing you over to them! There weren't that many, but it was the middle of the day! They'd open the door and try to coax you over, it was sort've funny and entertaining! As we left the district we found a tour desk and decided that we should book a tour to see the countryside, in particular clog making, cheese and windmills. The stereotypical Dutch thing! We were excited, and booked it for Monday! We also got tickets to the Heineken Experience at the old Heineken Brewery. We continued exploring the little streets and canals, there are so many, and found a little pub for lunch. More importantly it had wifi, hello outside world and friends! After a few beers and lunch we decided to go and do the Heineken Experience that afternoon, and headed that way. It was still raining, and getting heavier. We found refuge in a nice little pub right near a canal as it started to storm. A couple of beers in we pieced a few things together, the name (Cafe Mankind), the brochures and posters, some of the clientele, and discovered that it was most likely a gay pub. And it was still bucketing down outside, so there we stayed. Finally the rain let up and we could get to the brewery! We did the tour, which was a little disappointing, but had 2 free beers at the end. And they had a horse named Gerard. After the tour we headed back to our apartment along the canals, stopping at a couple of places for a drink. It was getting late, but it stays light till like 10pm so it didn't feel it. We had a little rest, then jumped on the tram back into Central Amsterdam for some dinner. Daniel geralded me good when I was sleeping. He'll learn not to **** with a geralder soon enough. Everyone seems to speak English too; the tv's in English, signs sometimes show English first, and they sometimes don't bother with Dutch with us, just straight to English! With dinner done we decided to walk the Red Light District again to see it at night. Much busier, lots of full windows and heaps of people! After a bit if a walk around, the day was catching up with us, so we headed back to the apartment. Day 1 Amsterdam, done. But still no sign of clogs.
