After being dropped off by a taxi in Queenstown at a hostel we found in our Lonely Planet, we were told it was full so had to hike back up the road to a different hostel that only had a room for one night so we dropped our stuff off there & hiked back down to the previous hostel to book up a room there for the few nights after that. We didn't venture very far from our hostel & had dinner at an italian restaurant close to us, it was really expensive but we got to try some local wines. We later found the main part of town right around the corner! As we had to check out of the first hostel at 10am I set my alarm for 9am. At 9.10 someone was knocking on the door & asked if we were checkng out today. I said yeh but check out isn't til 10! They said it's 10 past 10 now! So we finally worked out that the Pilot had given us the correct time on the flight to Christchurch & I never should have changed my watch the second time! Oops!
We booked a jet boating trip for our first full day. It was fun, the boats can move in an inch of water, we did lots of spins on the Shotover River & saw the part in Lord of the Rings where the baddies are after Aowyn & Frodo & she makes the river come round the corner and get the baddies! But by far the scariest bit of that trip was the bus journey to the river. We had to drive round a single dirt track up a mountain & every time we turned a corner it felt like we were going to go off the end of the cliff!
Charlie wasted no time booking up his bungy jump & skydive & booked to do them both on the same day. The 15000ft skydive was to be in the morning & the 134m bungy jump was going to be in the afternoon. We were told to go to the corner of a road at 7am & we waited there for ages. At about 7.30 we went inside the building to see if it was running late but they said we were supposed to check in first so we had missed it. They changed the time to later that morning but it was called off completely due to bad weather. He completed the Nevis Bungy Jump, the highest in New Zealand. You have to go out over a canyon in a cable car to do it & that was scary enough, I don't think his nerves were too good after the guy strapping him up told him he was a Tottenham supporter!
We booked a camper van to sleep & travel in up to the north island & camped the first night on the street but we were rudely awoken at 8.30am by the council who asked us to move away from the town to camp! We found somewhere 10 miles out of town, it was a national park area by a lake where we camped for free.
That day we went on a Lord of the Rings tour when we were shown filming locations around the area. They were the Misty Mountains, the forest were Sean Bean got killed, Isengard and one part where Sam & Frodo are hiding & looking down at the Oliphants marching past. It was good to see but nothing was left of the sets so you had to use your imagination!!
Our last day, I was scammed into doing a Canyon Swing with Charlie. I went first & I was too scared to jump off the edge so the guy ended up pushing me off! Charlie went off backwards, I don't think it was too hard after his Bungy Jump!
