FRIDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2006
arrived in Chiang Mai after a tedious 11hour overnight bus journey.got housed, changed and fed then spent the night at a thai boxing match which was a quality experience. The atmosphere was intense- really enjoyed it which suprised me in a way as i didn't expect to. It's really lethal though - the fighters have no mercy whatsoever and pretty much anything goes! Gaz got a photo with the winner of the main fight which he bummed about! The walk back home was a bit scary (for me at least) - Chiang Mai is really quiet at night which makes it a bit eery.
SATURDAY 9TH DECEMBER 2006
1ST day of the 3day jungle trek to Pai (towards the Burmese border). Group of 10 people who were all pretty sound. when we arrived at the first village (the Lisu tribe) the kids were like wild animals climbing and jumping into the truck trying to grab sweets from us.Village was remote - some of the kids couldn't even speak and had been taught only to say "10 baht" (which is asking for money). Began trekking in the afternoon to reach the 2nd village where we stayed overnight (the Karen hill tribe). Probably the best night so far. Sat round a bonfire watching and learning the hill tribe dances (yes even Gaz....photos to follow :)).
SUNDAY 10TH DECEMBER 2006
trekked for 4hours until we reached a waterfall. We all swam beneath it which was cool even if the water was freezing. We then trekked again to reach the elephant camp.watched them being showered down then went on a 2hour ride on one of them. Ours was the dad - everyone was amazed by the size of its penis which we obviously couldn't see much to gaz's disappointment - itr actually trailed along the floor! There were also baby elephants that walked beside us who were gorgeous but cheeky.
MONDAY 11TH DECEMBER 2006
Final day of trek. Think 3days was long enough - not as fit as i thought :) Also went bamboo rafting which was made all the more fun by the thai guides being absolutely battered on whiskey! To get onto the river we had to step over a log but crouch at the same time to fit under the strip of bamboo overhead. I couldn't manage to co-ordinate myself though and ended up snapping the pole and falling on my arse! painful for me but hilarious for the lads! I only got worse though as we rafted downstream. Trying to hold onto a branch so it wouldn't snap back and hit Gaz i failed to let go & ended up being pulle back with a lot of force! Then - to make matters worse the drunk guide crashed our raft which caused us all to go flying & gave us quite a few cuts. At another point gaz got his foot stuck in the raft (between the bamboo shoots) & screamed like a girl afraid his ankle would hit a rock and snap! Then there was the seaweed and mud slinging between groups which got messy! All in all a mint day though.
TUESDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2006
sorted our lives out (washing, burning CDs etc) then went to Chiang Mai night market. Had some awesome stuff such as paintings, fabrics, wood carvings etc. Definately gonna come back in the future and do a mass shop! Gaz got some sexy shorts (his words not mine!)
